Darrell in contention for Somerset return

Deunte Darrell leads a group of players trying to force their way into Somerset’s Cup Match team this year.

The Willow Cuts all-rounder is a strong candidate to be recalled to the champions’ team a second time after a two-year absence.

Darrell made his Cup Match debut as a colt for the West Enders at Wellington Oval in 2009 and the following year stroked a polished knock of 72 at Somerset to earn MVP honours.

However, his Cup Match career was interrupted when he lost his place in Somerset’s team in 2012 while serving a Bermuda Cricket Board suspension.

Darrell was recalled in 2014 and featured the following year before moving abroad in 2016.

The player’s return perhaps could not have been more timely for Somerset, who have been forced to find cover for experienced all-rounders Kamau Leverock and Derrick Brangman, who are both unavailable this year.

Leverock is back playing in Britain for Nottinghamshire second XI while Brangman is serving a one-year Bermuda Cricket Board ban for breaching its Code of Conduct.

Darrell has been named in the Vice-President’s XI, led by Terryn Fray, for Somerset’s final trial match tomorrow.

Others trying to force their way into the team include Steven Bremar — who recently captained Cleveland County to an upset over Eastern Counties holders Bailey’s Bay — Warwick seam bowler Chare Smith, and Southampton Rangers seam bowlers Sheldon Caesar and Nyrobi Mills.

Jordan DeSilva, the Somerset captain, will lead the President’s XI.

Michael Corday, Somerset’s chairman of selectors, is encouraged by the level of enthusiasm and commitment the players have demonstrated in training.

“Every player has been working hard and putting in a total effort in training and I am looking forward to seeing some impressive performances in the trial match,” he said.

“The competition is fierce at the moment and that’s just the way we prefer it.

“I am excited and looking forward to getting into the room and debating all angles.

“All the selectors input will again be invaluable in ensuring the selection of the most balanced team possible to win the cup.”

Somerset’s final trial starts at 10am with the players asked to be at Somerset Cricket Club by 9am.
