Somerset are fully in control after the first day of the Cup Match Classic, declaring on 378 for nine and limiting St George’s to 53 for four for a lead of 324.

Stephen Outerbridge top scored on 92 for the home side at Somerset Cricket Club with 92, while Chris Douglas and Terryn Fray set a Cup Match record with a first-wicket stand of 153.

Fray, who scored 90, and Douglas, who ended up with 74, broke the previous best opening stand of 143, set by Arnold Manders and Wendell Smith for St George’s in 1991.

Tre Manders also hit a half-century for Somerset, with 57. Zeko Burgess and Onias Bascome had three wickets each for St George’s, with two for Allan Douglas Jr and one for Detroy Smith.

St George’s hardly made any inroads into the opposing total, with Mishael Paynter, Temiko Wilson, Oronde Bascome and Smith all out early on. Malachi Jones had two wickets for Somerset with one for Greg Maybury and Dion Stovell.
