Easy wins for Somerset

Jordan DeSilva had an outstanding bowling spell

Somerset Cricket Club picked up two wins in the Twenty20 First Division, beating Western Stars by nine wickets on Saturday and Devonshire Recreation Club by 53 runs yesterday at Somerset.

Wicketkeeper Jade Morrissey hit 76 from 53 balls at the top of the innings as Somerset posted a massive 178 for six against Devonshire Rec, who were then restricted to125 for nine in reply.

Morrissey, who put on 41 for the first wicket with Jerez Eve off 5.5 overs, was fifth out when the score was 139, hitting ten fours and two sixes.

Isaiah Richardson, batting at No 6, added 36 not out from 23 balls with four fours and a six, while captain Jordan DeSilva scored 21 for the West Enders.

Chris Dailey claimed three for 45 for Rec while Denar Johnson took two for 31.

Devonshire Rec fell behind the required run rate despite an opening stand of 49 between Dailey and captain Freeman Lema.

Lema led the batting with 77 from 45 balls, hitting ten fours and four sixes before he was third out on 104 after bringing up the hundred with a stand of 41 with Kevin Abraham.

However, by then only 4.4 overs were remaining with 75 runs still needed for victory.

Dailey was the only other Rec batsman in double figures, scoring 22, as Marcus Johnson claimed three for 20 to lead the Somerset bowling.

Seth Gibbons claimed two wickets for three runs in his one over.

On Saturday, Somerset dismissed Western Stars for just 61 in 14.1 overs, before reaching their target in 7.1 overs with nine wickets in hand.

Captain Jordan DeSilva had an outstanding bowling spell for Somerset, taking five for 12 from four overs, while Tai Cariah and Justin Corday both picked up two wickets as Stars slumped after brothers Swayne and Seth Campbell contributed 19 and 14 at the top of the order in an opening stand of 28.

No Stars batsmen reached double figures after that as they quickly slumped to 46 for five in less than four overs.

Somerset quickly wrapped up victory with Greg Maybury scoring 35 not out at No 3 and Jerez Eve 16 not out in a second wicket stand of 52 in just six overs. Devonshire Rec also suffered a loss on Saturday when Warwick beat them by seven wickets at Southampton Oval.

Devonshire Rec scored 94 with opener Drewonde Bascome their top scorer with 39 as Kenny Darrell claimed three for 15 in four overs.

Kyle Swan scored 24 and Kian Butterfield 18 not out as Warwick replied with 95 for three in just 7.5 overs to seal the win.
