Bermuda and Canada shared a point each after their rain-hit match in the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier at North Field, National Sports Centre, was abandoned yesterday.

The match was initially reduced to 16 overs because of a rain delay during Bermuda’s innings after the home side won the toss and elected to bat.

Canada were 40 without loss replying to Bermuda’s total of 82 for nine when another shower sent the players back off the pitch.

The interruption arrived one over shy of the minimum quota of five overs required to constitute a match and dragged on beyond the scheduled cut-off time at 2.40pm.

Canada were well ahead on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method when rain halted play for good with only six more balls needed to be bowled to make the match official.

“We knew that the rain was coming, so it was just a matter of time,” Terryn Fray, the Bermuda captain, said.

“If the game wasn’t affected by rain and we would have got 20 overs, we would have stood a good chance coming out on top.

“However, with the rain coming, winning the toss and selecting to bat backfired for us a bit and in the end we are happy with the no result.

“However, had we had a full match we would have backed ourselves.”

Janeiro Tucker, the Bermuda assistant coach, admits his side were content with the point.

“It was a bad day from our point of view,” Tucker said.

“We came here with a game plan, but we had rain delays so had to revise that plan with less overs.

“The wicket wasn’t particularly good and was worse than Sunday at White Hill so we had to revise our target and then the rain came so we weren’t best pleased.

“But we’ll take the point and move on to the next match against Cayman Islands.

Ingleton Liburd, the Canada coach, said it was frustrating to be denied the win because of the bad weather.

“We got four overs in and were hoping we could have got in the fifth one and then it would have been a game,”

“There’s nothing we could do about Mother Nature. You can’t tell rain when to come.

“We were in a strong position and now both teams get one point.”

Bermuda made one change to their team that beat the United States by six runs the previous day, with Derrick Brangman coming in for Justin Pitcher.

The home side made a solid start on a sluggish pitch but lost a bunch of wickets pushing for quick runs after the match was reduced to 16 overs.

Okera Bascome (23), Kamau Leverock (11), Onias Bascome (14) and Deunte Darrell (10) all made starts for Bermuda but were unable to go on.

Third change Dillon Heyliger led the Canada attack with four for 16 while fellow seam bowler Romesh Eranga and off spinner Nikhil Dutta took two wickets each.

Rizwan Cheema (25) and Rodrigo Thomas (13) were the Canada batsmen at the crease when play was abandoned.

In the second game at North Field yesterday, the United States defeated the Cayman Islands by ten runs on the D/L/S method.

Cayman scored 68 runs for eight wickets off 20 overs, with Luke Harrington-Myers scoring 17 not out. In reply, the US were 60 for five off 15 overs.

Steven Taylor scored 17 and Aaron Jones was on 16 not out when the rain halted to play for the final time.
