BCB Academy consolidated fourth place in the Evening Cricket League’s top flight after crushing Fine Leg by 130 runs — and on Monday night they gave Tuff Dogs, newly crowned champions for the fourth successive year, a run for their money for the second this season at Shelly Bay.

In May, Tuff Dogs scraped home against the Academy by four wickets with two balls to spare. On Monday, the margin was six runs — and it needed a captain’s innings from Terence Corday to dig the champions, who lost only once all season, out of a big hole.

Tuff Dogs slumped to nine for four after seven overs, Keith Whorms snapping up three for 16, but Corday halted the slide by slamming four sixes and two fours in a 30-ball 56 to help lift his side to 109 for five.

Tuff Dogs then restricted the Academy to 103 for five, Jaden Manders topscoring with 28, as slow bowler Arnold Manders claimed two for 16.

Tuff Dogs finished the season nine points clear of The Associates, the only team to defeat them.

In last week’s game Charles Trott hammered 82 as the Academy piled up 163 for four before bundling out nine-man FLB for 33 in seven overs to virtually guarantee themselves a place in next month’s knockout.

In the First Division, St George’s completed the double over High Flyaz, winning a pair of games at Wellington Oval by 30 runs and 16 runs respectively, to leave Deloitte bottom of the table.

St George’s hold the key to the outcome of the league title.

On Friday, they face second-placed PHC at Shelly Bay. PHC, with an inferior net run rate, need a thumping win to deprive long-time leaders CV Chargers, newcomers this season, of the title.
