St George’s closed out their season with a convincing victory to confirm the relegation of Flatts Victoria back to the First Division.

Onias and Oronde Bascome hit half-centuries as St George’s posted 229 after being sent in to bat by Flatts who replied with 131 all out in 41 overs.

Onias, the captain, scored 93 before he was caught behind by captain Cofield Robinson off Dajun Carey, who had earlier also picked up the wicket of Oronde for 59.

Onias’s 93 came off 87 balls and included six sixes and six fours. Batting at No 5, he came in at 32 for three and added 148 with his older brother in 26 overs, Oronde, who faced 99 balls and hit seven fours before he was out in the 39th over with the score 180.

Nelson Bascome, who took the new ball, led the Flatts bowling with four for 27 from 8.4 overs, while Carey was the most expensive bowler, giving up 67 runs in ten overs for his two crucial wickets.

Flatts never threatened to make a serious run chase, after losing the wicket of opener Carey in the fifth ball of the innings from Herbie Bascome, caught behind by Temiko Wilson for a duck. By the seventeenth over Flatts were facing a heavy loss at 50 for five, which then became 58 for six before their biggest stand of 49 for the seventh wicket between Barry DeCouto and Reggie Baker brought up the 100.

DeCouto faced 85 balls for his 19 after coming in at No 3, while Baker, batting at No 8, was the top scorer with 46 from 84 balls with six fours and a six before he was run out.

Herbie Bascome led the St George’s bowling with four for 25 from ten overs while son Onias took three wickets for just one run in three overs, which included two maidens.

The match between champions Southampton Rangers and home team Bailey’s Bay at Sea Breeze Oval was not played when no umpires showed up.
