Lord’s (Bermuda Under-19s won toss): Cleveland County (10pts) beat Bermuda Under-19s by three runs

Cleveland County returned to winning ways with a thrilling three-run victory over Bermuda Under-19s at Lord’s yesterday.

After suffering a 12-run defeat in their opener against Somerset Bridge last time out, Cleveland batted their way to a respectable 158 for four, with openers Q’Shai Darrell (48) and Kristian Singh (53) leading the charge.

Despite the strong target, Cleveland were made to sweat as Bermuda Under-19s looked set to surpass the total comfortably reaching 83 for no loss before the tenth over courtesy of devastating batting by Ori Wilson (46), which included three sixes in four balls in the eighth over.

However, despite staring down the barrel of defeat, with Bermuda Under-19s requiring five from the final three balls in a thrilling finale, Cleveland managed to hold firm with to clinch their first win of the new campaign.

It proved a particularly memorable outing for 13-year-old Zeri Tomlinson (2), who not only was handed a surprise place at fifth in Cleveland’s batting order but he also grabbed the bragging rights over his Bermuda Under-19 team-mates.

“It ended up a really close game but thankfully it ended up good for us,” he said.

“I didn’t expect to go out at number five and I was a bit nervous but thankfully I didn’t get a duck. I managed to get off the mark and that felt good.

“It was fun playing against some of my team-mates and it was extra special to get the win.”

Meanwhile, Arnold Manders the Bermuda Under-19s coach was left to rue fine margins in defeat with inexperience shining through at pivotal moments of the encounter.

“Losing that first wicket proved decisive,” said Manders, whose side lost a further three wickets, only adding a further 11 runs to the scoreboard over three overs, after Wilson was dismissed.

“There are lessons to be learnt but I’m proud of all the players. They’re a young team, we’re the Under-19 team but all of these guys are under-17.

“It’s fine margins. They have obvious talent but the technical, fitness and mental aspects we have to hone and improve on.

“We’re obviously disappointed but it’s all a process for this team, they will only get better as we progress and learn from setbacks.”
