White Hill Field (Somerset Bridge won toss): Bridge beat Warwick Workmen’s Club by seven runs

Joshua Gilbert, the Somerset Bridge captain, batted throughout their innings, scoring an unbeaten 92, to lay the foundations for his side’s seven-run win over Warwick Workmen’s Club.

For the second time this season Bridge were the beneficiaries of 12 penalty runs after Warwick were penalised for a slow over rate at White Hill Field yesterday.

Bridge were also awarded penalty runs during their 12-run victory over Cleveland County in their season opener.

The home side made a flying start against Warwick thanks to some explosive batting during the power play from Gilbert and his opening partner Adrian Burrows, the pair putting on 91 runs for the first wicket.

Burrows, whose 46 came from just 35 balls, including eight fours, rode his luck on occasions, with Warwick twice dropping the left-hander before he chopped onto his stumps off medium pace bowler Jamar Stovell.

Bridge stalled somewhat after Burrows’s dismissal, however, they were still able to post a respectable total of 183 for four from their allotted overs, helped in no small part by some truly shoddy fielding by Warwick.

In reply, Warwick recovered from six for two, after openers Stefan Dill and Stovell both fell cheaply, with a third-wicket partnership of 88 between Dominic Subair and Corey Burgess energising their hopes of maintaining their perfect start to the campaign.

When the destructive pair fell in quick succession, Subair caught in the deep for 37 and Burgess stumped for 60, the pendulum began swinging heavily in Bridge’s favour.

Even so, Warwick’s middle order kept the scoreboard ticking over, with Torleair Caines, Kyle Swan and the unbeaten Al Ible all hitting with plenty of brio to leave Warwick requiring 19 off the final over.

It seemed as though the momentum was with Warwick when Ible clumped Noel Woods’s first ball for six, but there was to be no meltdown by the experienced seam bowler who conceding just five more runs from the over.

“That win was crucial in putting us back in the hunt for first place,” said Gilbert, whose 92 came from 56 balls and included ten fours and four sixes.

“Anything over 150 at White Hill Field is a good score and you feel like you can defend it.

“The 12 penalty points certainly came in handy, just as they did in our win against Cleveland.

“But if you train hard and play hard, usually you get the fruits of your labour.

“It’s nice to get on a winning streak again and we’re looking forward to our game against Western Stars. They won’t be any rollover, either.”

Gilbert, who was the pick of the Bridge bowlers, finishing with one for 19 off four overs, also praised his seam attack for sticking to the task.

“Dominic Subair and Corey Burgess batted well for Warwick,” he said. “They have some young firepower and nearly chased down 183.

“But our seam bowlers stuck at it and did exactly what I asked of them. The game was see-sawing a bit and Corey’s wicket was big for us. Everyone held onto their catches and that was crucial.”

In the earlier game at White Hill Field yesterday, Bermuda Under-19s beat Devonshire Recreation Club by seven wickets.

Devonshire Rec were bowled out for 80 off 14.3 overs, with Eijaz Shakir taking three for 14 off two overs. In reply, Bermuda Under-19s comfortably chased down their target off 11.3 overs, Logan Jones top scoring with 32 and Zeri Tomlinson finishing on 31 not out.
