Leverock on a century streak
Lord’s (Somerset won toss): Somerset Cricket Club (10pts) bt St George’s by 46 runs
Kamau Leverock blazed his way to a second successive century to guide Somerset to a 46-run win on Duckworth/Lewis over St George’s in the Premier Division Twenty20 competition at Lord’s yesterday.
The opening batsman thumped an unbeaten 126 from 56 deliveries, which included 11 sixes and nine fours, to lay the foundation for Somerset’s total of 185 for three after electing to bat.
Leverock dominated an 88-run first-wicket partnership with Chris Douglas and capitalised on some loose bowling with an array of powerful hitting that kept the fielders chasing leather and the scoreboard ticking over.
He reached his half-century off 23 balls with a single off Treadwell Gibbons and his hundred off 47 balls after scampering through for another single off Detroy Smith, who bore the brunt of his swashbuckling knock.
The milestone was the 25-year-old’s second on the trot, having stroked 119 from 42 balls in Somerset’s previous outing against Willow Cuts.
“This is the first time I’ve gone back to back [centuries] so this [innings] is definitely up there,” Leverock said.
“I’ve been hitting it well for the last three weeks and I was a bit unlucky against Rangers. But the last couple of weeks in training I’ve been hitting them well, so I just wanted to take that into the game.”
Leverock also added 59 runs in an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership with wicketkeeper Amari Ebbin, who scored 22 from 19 balls.
Douglas was the only other Somerset batsman in double figures after stroking 17 from 21 balls before he was bowled by a Rohan Richards’s yorker.
The match was reduced to 17 overs per side after three overs were lost to a rain delay late in Somerset’s innings.
Nzari Paynter and his cousin Oronde Bascome claimed the remaining Somerset wickets to fall.
Despite losing the wickets of captain Onias Bascome and Macai Simmons during the power play, St George’s made a real fist of it in their reply with opener Temiko Wilson leading the fightback.
Wilson struck an aggressive 59 from 34 balls, that included five sixes and three fours, to keep his team in with a shout.
However, the match turned sharply once Wilson was bowled playing around a delivery from Terence Corday, who also accounted for the prized scalp of the Gibbons.
Paynter took up the challenge after Wilson departed in the eleventh over, striking two sixes in an unbeaten knock of 30 from 20 deliveries, before the overs expired to secure Somerset’s second win of the season.
Captain Bascome (18) and Simmons (12) were the remaining batsmen in double figures for St George’s who replied with 150 for seven in their allotted overs.
Corday was the pick of the Somerset bowlers with figures of four for 18 and received good support from youngster Azar Morrisey, who claimed two for 19.
Wicketkeeper Ebbin also impressed behind the stumps as he executed two excellent stumpings off of Corday’s bowling.
“St George’s gave me a little scare earlier with good power hitting from ‘Apples’ [Wilson] and the rest of the guys supporting,” added Leverock, who also claimed a wicket. “But I’m just glad the youngsters are beginning to tune in and start to earn their craft as bowlers.”
