Youth cricket leagues ready for action

The Executive of the Bermuda Cricket Board has announced the start of the 2020 BCB Under-11 and Under-14 Youth Leagues.

Hiscox will continue to be the title sponsor of the Under-11 league with games being played on Mondays and Wednesdays until September 9 at Warwick Academy Field.

Teams include Warwick Academy, Warwick Workmen’s Club, Somerset Cricket Club and Cleveland County.

Mike Krefta, chief executive Hiscox Re & ILS, said: “Hiscox are once again proud to support youth cricket in Bermuda. Our sincere thanks go to the coaches, volunteers and the BCB for organising the youth leagues, especially at this uncertain time. We are delighted to play our part in helping our youth cricket teams flourish.”

For the first time, the Under-14 League is sponsored by KPMG with matches being played on Tuesdays and Fridays until September 11 at Warwick Academy Field and Harris Bay Field.

Teams include Warwick Academy, Cleveland, Somerset, Warwick Workmen’s Club, St George’s and a BCB select team from the Under-15 National Academy.

Steve Woodward, managing director of KPMG Private Enterprise, said: “We are delighted to work with the Bermuda Cricket Board on such an important community initiative as a sponsor of youth cricket in Bermuda.

“As part of our core values, the firm works to support and get involved with various youth initiatives as we recognise how important it is to be involved in the community in which we live and work. We are pleased that the BCB has been able to move ahead with its youth programme this summer and look forward to an exciting competition.”

Arnold Manders, vice-president of the BCB and chairman of Youth Development, added: “The BCB is happy to announce that our Under-11 and 14 & Under Youth Leagues are scheduled to start on the week of September 10, 2020.

“Health and safety protocols will be taken seriously to ensure the safety of all players and staff [temperature checks of all participants, social distancing, hand sanitising, no sharing of gear etc]. We wish all of the teams the best and hope that the games will be played in the true spirit of cricket and sportsmanship.

“On behalf of the board we wish to thank our sponsors, Hiscox and KPMG for continuing to be major supporters of our youth programmes. Although we are off to a late start, with them we are able to provide our players with a little bit of normalcy throughout these times through cricket.”
