Live video: Sussex end first day against Glamorgan firmly on top
Delray Rawlins’s Sussex will be keen to build on a solid start to their first innings on day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship match away to Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens today.
The visitors were 99 without loss at the close of the opening day’s play, 186 run behind in reply to Glamorgan’s 285 all out, with openers Aaron Thomason (52) and the in-form Tom Haines (43) at the crease.
Thomason nudged a David Lloyd ball off the back foot into the covers and scampered through for a quick single to bring up his half-century off 64 balls in 73 minutes.
Rawlins and his team-mates will now look to bat themselves in a position of strength and take firm control of the four-day match when play resumes.
Sussex made early inroads with the new ball after winning the toss and sending their hosts to bat.
Glamorgan were pegged back at 23 for three before opener Lloyd (84) and middle-order batsman Kiran Carlson (127 not out) dropped anchor and added 110 for the fourth wicket to revive the innings.
Sussex eventually regained the upper hand as Glamorgan lost three additional wickets for 46, including that of Lloyd, who faced 99 balls and struck 11 boundaries during his 131-minute stay at the crease.
Carlson soldiered on as the visitors moved in for the kill, adding a further 87 with Daniel Douthwaite (36) for the seventh wicket before ultimately running out of partners as Jack Carson, the Sussex off spinner, removed the tail in quick succession.
Ollie Robinson led the Sussex attack, claiming four for 50. Carson took three for 14 off seven overs and Robinson’s new ball partner, Henry Crocombe, two for 44.
Rawlins is due to come in at No 5, having been promoted one spot up the order in an unchanged Sussex squad from the one that drew against Lancashire last week.
