Brangmans’ all round perfomance sees off Somerset

Derrick Brangman produced an outstanding all round display to guide St David’s to a comfortable seven wicket win over Somerset in the Premier Division Twenty20 at Devonshire Recreation Club yesterday.

The son of St David’s coach Ricky Brangman claimed two wickets with his left arm spin and struck an unbeaten 29 at a crucial stage of the innings.

He also dominated a match winning 54 run fourth-wicket partnership with Justin Pitcher (16), the St David’s captain.

It was perhaps only fitting for Brangman to stroke the winning runs with a straight driven six off Alje Richardson to end the game in dramatic fashion.

The all-rounder’s runs came off 25 balls and included two sixes and a solitary boundary.

Ricardo Brangman led the St David’s run chase with 30 from 32 balls that contained five fours.

He added 37 along with Sammy Robinson (17) for the first wicket as St David’s made a positive start replying to Somerset’s 116 all out.

St David’s were cruising along at seven runs per over with Brangman and Robinson coping reasonably well on a sluggish track rotating the strike and dispatching anything loose to the boundary ropes.

The stand was finally broken in the final over of the mandatory fielding power play when Robinson feathered a catch behind to wicketkeeper-batsman Chris Douglas off the bowling of fast bowler and deputising captain Greg Maybury.

Ricky Brangman added a further 23 with Kevin Hurdle (13) to keep the run chase on track before St David’s lost two wickets with the addition of six runs as Somerset fought their way back in the match.

Kamau Leverock took a brilliant running catch down the ground off the bowling of medium pacer Terrence Corday to dismiss Hurdle.

Ricky Brangman, who seemed destined for a half century, also fell to an excellent catch by Alje Richardson at short long off his cousin Isaiah Richardson’s bowling.

However, that was as it good as it got for Somerset as Derrick Brangman and Pitcher dropped anchor and saw their team to victory with 14 balls to spare.

Maybury, Corday and Isaiah Richardson claimed a wicket each for a Somerset team playing without regular captain Jordan DeSilva.

Earlier, the west enders paid the price for some poor shot selection after winning the toss and opting to take first strike.

Somerset suffered an early setback after losing opener Douglas (4) cheaply in the third over before Leverock revived the innings with some robust hitting.

The pinch-hitter dominated a 36 run second wicket partnership with Alje Richardson (6) as the run rate soared to nine runs per over.

However, the match turned sharply in St David’s favour after Leverock was caught behind by wicketkeeper Ricky Brangman off the bowling of Brian Hall for a match high 41 from just 23 balls that included four sixes and three fours.

St David’s kept the pressure on with some tight bowling which ultimately took its toll as Somerset lost wickets at regular intervals attempting to force the issue.

Derrick Brangman ignited the slide after removing top order pair Alje Richardson and Dalin Richardson (12), the latter off his own bowling, in successive overs.

Fourth change Shaddai Somersall then plucked out Somerset’s middle and lower order while Pitcher and Hall also claimed wickets in their second spells to restrict Somerset to a modest total.

Somersall led the St David’s attack with three for 20 from just two overs while Pitcher, Hall and Derrick Brangman took two wickets each, the latter two bowlers finishing with identical figures of two for 22 respectively.

Middle order pair Isaiah Richardson (25) and Maybury (16) were the remaining Somerset batsmen in double figures.
