Southampton Oval (Warwick won toss): Western Stars beat Warwick by 236 runs

Western Stars clinched promotion to the Premier Division after handing Warwick a crushing defeat in a lopsided 50 overs affair at Southampton Oval yesterday.

Stars piled up 308 for seven in their allotted overs after being sent to bat by their hosts who were left to rue their decision.

Jason Anderson (62) and Dante Wellman (59) led the carnage with aggressive fifties. Tre Manders chipped in with 47, Gavin Manders 42, Jaiden Manders 33 and player-coach Jekon Edness 22 not out lower down the order.

Openers Gavin and Jaiden Manders added 86 to lay a solid foundation. Anderson and Wellman then produced the biggest stand of the innings of 113 to keep Warwick toiling in the field before the overs ran out.

Fifth-change bowler Cory Burgess was the pick of the Warwick bowling with three for 57 from eight overs.

The hosts had their work cut out for them in reply to Stars’ formidable total and ultimately came up well short as they folded for 72 in 29.2 overs.

Seth Campbell inflicted the heaviest damage with the ball as he claimed four for 22, supported by Brian Hall (two for 15) and Rohan Davis (two for 19).

Davis made the initial breakthrough when he bowled Stephan Dill (2) in the second over. Burgess (4), Malachi Jones (2), Torleair Caines (6) and Kian Butterfield (1) and Ajani Lee (1) also made cameos as Warwick quickly slumped to 21 for six in the ninth over.

Jamar Stovel and Jahcobi Butterfield produced Warwick’s biggest stand of 43 for the seventh wicket to delay the inevitable before the former was caught and bowled by Jadon Springer.

Stovel’s dismissal triggered another slide as Warwick’s remaining three wickets tumbled for eight runs in four overs.

Butterfield led the Warwick batting with 28 while Stovel, the only other batsman in double figures, chipped in with 18.
