Flatts thrash Devonshire to claim first T20 win
Sea Breeze Oval (Devonshire won toss): Flatts beat Devonshire by ten wickets
Flatts romped to their first win of the Athene T20 League First Division season after easing past Devonshire at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday.
Nelson Bascome claimed five for 18 as visiting Devonshire were rolled over 71 in just 18.3 overs.
Jan-Johan Nel and Kijuan Franks then took just 7.2 overs to reach their target and wrap up the hosts dominant display.
Bascome was in menacing form with the ball as he blew away Devonshire's top order without breaking sweat.
The experienced seamer made the initial breakthrough with the new ball when he trapped Derwin Adams with a delivery pitched on centre and off stump.
He then dismissed Ankoma Cannonier off his own bowling with successive deliveries.
Drewonde Bascome blocked out the hat-trick ball to deny his namesake the feat but he was dismissed on the next delivery after offering a return catch.
That left Devonshire floundering at a total of just 19 runs for three in the fourth over.
The 44-year-old kept the pressure on and made further inroads.
Koshun Simmons was the next to be dismissed, nicking a full-length ball behind to wicketkeeper Cofield Robinson, before Chris Dailey was held at backward square chasing a wide ball outside off stump to complete an impressive five-wicket haul.
“It was one of my better spells for the season, probably more consistent,” Bascome said.
“It was intelligent bowling and I used my swing into the wind.
“Normally I build the pressure and get wickets here and there. Today I was able to capitalise.”
Second-change bowler Swadesh Gond offered good support to finish with figures of two for 13.
Freeman Lema was Devonshire’s top scorer with 20 from 21 balls.
Wicketkeeper Aljame Zuill chipped in with a solid effort of 15, with Adams adding 11 at the top of the order.
In reply, Flatts openers Nel and Franks lived a charmed life as they were both dropped, the latter on four occasions as they set about their task.
Nel, who led the chase with a swift 42 from 27 balls, which included five fours and two sixes, was put down at extra cover with 22 still required.
Franks’s total of 28 included five fours.
He was fortunate to still be at the crease at the end of the innings as he offered a return catch, while he was also dropped at mid on, third man and down the ground.
Bascome bore the brunt of some heavy hitting as he went for 47 in his allotted four overs.
