Tre Manders shows no mercy as Stars brush aside Somerset
Somerset Cricket Club (Western Stars won toss): Western Stars beat Somerset by 116 runs
Tre Manders followed up his Western Counties century the day before with another destructive batting performance as he led Western Stars to a 116-run victory over Somerset in the Athene T20 League Premier Division at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday.
Manders had no pity on the Somerset bowlers as balls were sailing to all corners of the field and beyond with his individual total of 109 only one shy of the total Somerset score of 110. Somerset were made to pay when Manders was dropped on the long-off boundary on 69.
He dominated a second-wicket partnership worth 124 runs with cousin Jaiden Manders before the latter was stumped by wicketkeeper Reid Jones off the bowling of Azar Morrissey for 31.
After losing the wicket of Khiry Furbert cheaply shortly after, Brian Hall joined Tre and the two put on a blistering 72-run partnership in only 4.3 overs before he gave Isaiah Richardson a simple return catch for a team-high 109 featuring four fours and ten sixes.
Hall was also in attacking mood smashing a quick fire, unbeaten 48 from only 19 balls as Stars posted an insurmountable total of 216-4 from their allotted overs.
Somerset were set 10.85 runs per over and had scored 12 of the first over but also lost Alje Richardson on the last ball.
Greg Maybury joined Jayden Albertze and both batted sensibly in pursuit of the target with a 32-run partnership before the former drove one to the long-off boundary into the waiting palms of Brian Hall for 23.
Stars bowling and fielding limited the batters from scoring freely. Somerset were 59-2 at the halfway point and well below the required run rate as they needed 15.7 runs in each of the remaining ten overs.
Other than Maybury, opener Albertze was the only batter from the top and middle order that offered any resistance against the disciplined Stars attack but he became the first of Jaiden Manders’s three wickets when he was caught for a team-high 26.
Tailender, Sheldon Caesar batted stubbornly for 24 not out as Somerset fell for a reply of 110 all out.
Manders claimed his three wickets for 16 runs from three overs and young Sebastian Davis three for 29 runs, which included the wicket of Isaiah Richardson who was out to a running catch with a last-minute dive by Dante Wellman on the long off boundary for 15.
“I had two good days of cricket,” said Tre Manders. “I was seeing the ball like a watermelon today.
“The team is on a high right and playing well. We will just take one game at a time.”
