Bermuda Cricket Board bans spitting culprit Torleair Caines for four matches
Warwick all-rounder Torleair Caines has been banned for four matches by the Bermuda Cricket Board for his role in a nasty incident in the Athene T20 League at PHC Field on August 21, The Royal Gazette understands.
Caines, who had been already suspended for two matches by his club for spitting at Southampton Rangers batter Dion Stovell, will now miss at least the next two weekends of league play.
Warwick, who have a bye in the Premier Division today, face Western Stars tomorrow, then Bailey’s Bay and Cleveland respectively on September 10 and 11, followed by Somerset on September 17.
Which means, in the mother of all ironies, that Caines would be eligible to return to cricket on September 18, when Warwick are due to face Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval.
It is unknown if the BCB suspension is to run concurrent with that which was handed down by Warwick because the governing body, which delivered its ruling on Thursday night, has yet to make a public announcement despite several promptings by the media.
Caines has served one match of his club ban.
Meanwhile, the length of the BCB suspension is bound to ruffle some feathers in sporting circles, as the last such reported incident — in December 2013 when St David’s footballer Detroy Smith spat at referee Anthony Francis during a Friendship Trophy match at Wellington Oval — resulted in a five-year ban.
