Premier Division Saturday: St George’s, Bay set up showdown
St George’s and Bailey’s Bay set up a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday after both recorded victories in their Athene T20 League Premier Division on Saturday.
St George’s defeated Western Stars, one of the four teams tied on 20 points in the title race, by 19 runs at St David’s while Bay beat Southampton Rangers by 43 runs at Sea Breeze Oval.
Opening batsman Allan Douglas Jr scored 58 from 33 balls with six sixes and three fours as St George’s posted 158 for nine in their 20 overs. Justin Robinson led the Stars bowling with three for 12 from three overs while opener Seth Campbell claimed two for 18 from four.
Shakai Darrell made a useful 27 in the middle order for St George’s and captain Onias Bascome 17 batting at No 7. The pair came together at 96 for five when Douglas was dismissed and added 50 as they posted a challenging score of more than 150.
Stars got close in their run chase thanks to their own in-form batsman, Tre Manders, who scored 45 at No 5 as they replied with 139 for six in their 20 overs.
Manders faced 37 balls and hit three sixes and three fours, while captain and wicketkeeper Khiry Furbert kept Stars’ hopes of victory alive with a run-a-ball 38 not out batting at No 7. Zeko Burgess claimed two for 26 to lead the St George’s bowling.
At Sea Breeze Oval, Bailey’s Bay posted 138 for three after winning the toss, with captain Terryn Fray scoring 51 from 40 balls, with three sixes and two fours. Chris Colby, batting at No 3, added 32 from 42 balls while wicketkeeper Shaquille Outerbridge scored 35 not out off 18 balls with four fours and a six.
Three Rangers bowlers took one wicket apiece — Dion Stovell, Janeiro Tucker and Vernon Eve.
Rangers could manage only 95 in reply with Tucker their top scorer with 48 from 35 balls at No 3. He hit three sixes and five fours, while Stovell was the only other batsman in double figures with 12.
Opener Jordan Burgess claimed three for 31 for Bay and D’Nyi Thomas three for nine from three overs. Sharye Tavares took two for ten in 2.3 overs.
Shorthanded Somerset picked up their first win of the season in anything other than Cup Match when they beat Cleveland by three wickets at White Hill Field.
Cleveland posted 104 for nine after winning the toss and batting first, with Q’Shai Darrell scoring 22, captain Makai Young 21 and veteran Dennis Musson 18 not out. Matty Watson had a good spell with the ball, taking four for 19, while Sheldon Caesar claimed two for 27.
In reply, Somerset, who played with nine men, scored 105 for five with Dominic Sabir their high man with 26 off 22 balls with four fours before he was run out. Watson, who opened the batting, scored 24 and Isaiah Richardson 18 from 17 balls as Somerset secured the win with just four balls remaining.
