Bermuda end Florida tour after injury scares

Jarryd Richardson has been called up to the Bermuda squad to replace the injured all-rounder Charles Trott for the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifiers in Argentina this week.

Richardson, who was said to have been originally left out of the squad as a result of school commitment overseas, will join the team in advance of the first game against Cayman on Saturday.

The need for a replacement became necessary when Bermuda abruptly ended their warm-up campaign in Tampa, Florida, because of the threat of injury after inadequate facilities contributed to two players getting hurt.

All-rounders Matty Watson (shoulder) and Trott (ankle) did not feature in either of the two matches played at the T20 President Cup because of injuries sustained during training.

The confines of Wesley Cricket Stadium, where Bermuda had looked to gain a running start ahead of travelling to Argentina, more resembled a cabbage patch than a facility conducive to frontline cricket.

No players were injured during the nine-wicket win against Rebels CC on Friday or the 116-run victory on Saturday against Triad Dragons, but a glimpse of the outfield recommended that this was no place for an international team to be going full pelt.

The scheduled second game against Tampa Tigers on Saturday night was due to be Bermuda’s last before heading to South America as part of an arrangement with Cricket USA.

Watson’s injury is said to be of the freak variety, but he is expected to stay with the squad until the result of a scan can be confirmed.

However, the news was not so good for Trott, of Southampton Rangers, who had made such good progress despite Bermuda’s struggles at the latter stages of Cricket World Cup Challenge League B in Uganda and Jersey.

The youngster suffered a broken ankle and will fly back to Bermuda, but the team is set be boosted by the imminent arrival in Argentina of St David’s captain Justin Pitcher, the bowling all-rounder, who was not part of the Florida trip, and coach Niraj Odedra who won the Ranji Trophy on Saturday with his club Saurashtra.
