Charles Trott adamant he will return stronger after injury
Charles Trott is determined to play a major role, both domestically and internationally, as he steps up his recovery from injury before the start of the new cricket season.
With the start of the new campaign looming on April 30, the all-rounder is continuing his rehabilitation from a broken metatarsal he sustained while away with the Bermuda squad at the T20 president Cup, in Florida, as they prepared for the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifiers in Argentina last month.
While Trott is facing a race against the clock to be fit for the new season, he will not rush his return as he remains fully focused on coming back stronger than before.
“Everything is going really well in terms of my recovery,” Trott said. “I’m back walking again without the medical boot, which I only use when I’m out and about just to be safe.
“I’m just hopeful that I have some good news from the doctors when I have my next appointment next week. If things are not right, they said I may need surgery, but hopefully it will be good news.
“Hopefully I can get back in the gym next week because I’m determined to come back stronger. Although I’m desperate to get back to playing, I’m not going to race because it could make things worse if I’m not careful. I don’t want to rush things because I’m looking at the injury as just a minor setback ahead of a major comeback.”
Reflecting on getting injured, Trott admits he was disappointed to play no part in Bermuda’s qualifying campaign, in which they breezed through the tournament with a flawless record to ensure progress into the final ICC T20 World Cup qualifiers in Bermuda in September.
“Obviously I was disappointed because I would have loved to have played my part,” added Trott, who spoke on the freak nature of his injury.
“We were warming up in training ahead of the first President’s Cup match and doing shuttle runs when I felt something pop. It was a bit of freak accident really, I didn’t slip or turn funny, I was just running normally and that’s when it happened.
“It’s funny because I felt no real pain at the time of the injury but then at the hospital they told me I had broken my metatarsal, and obviously it was incredibly frustrating.
“While it was a disappointing tournament for myself, I wouldn’t say it was hard to watch on from the sidelines. I have to applaud the rest of the team because they did what they had to and showed the world what we are capable of.”
With a golden opportunity for the national team to fulfil their aspiration of qualifying for the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup on home soil, Trott has set his sights on earning his place in the squad once again.
“I’m definitely determined to be part of the national squad again for the qualifiers,” said Trott, with Bermuda set to take on Canada, Cayman Islands and Panama in September, with the winner earning a spot at the World Cup in West Indies and United States.
“I think I’ve got enough time once I’m fit again to hopefully do what I can, have a good season and then take that into the qualifying tournament if I’m lucky enough to be selected.
“It’s definitely a huge opportunity for us to get to the World Cup. We are playing at home, but with it being at the end of our upcoming season, we have a lot of time to build up to it.
“All the players will have had the chance to find form and, if we can stay fit and all buy into what is needed, then I’m confident we can qualify.”
