The second annual Jason and Gary Memorial Six-A-Side Cricket Tournament has been hailed as a roaring success.

There was plenty of fun to be had for the entire family throughout the event, which was held in honour of late Southampton Rangers cricketer Gary Crofton and footballer Jason Raynor, at Southampton last weekend

“It went really well and I would like to thank all of our sponsors who supported this very good cause,” Janeiro Tucker, the Jason and Gary Scholarship Fund committee chairman, said.

“I thought it was a success and a very good turnout of people over the two days. It was a lot of fun and there was good camaraderie. Everything was good and we have a lot of positive feedback.”

The committee raised more than $7,000 during the event which will go towards the Jason and Gary Scholarship Fund to aid in the education and development of the island’s young people.

“We are very pleased with the amount of money raised for the good cause,” Tucker added.

The committee will now look to raise additional funding when the Jason & Gary Six-a-Side football Tournament takes place later this year at a venue yet to be confirmed.

Tucker and his fellow committee members raised nearly $10,000 from both events last year to cover schooling costs for Bermuda College students Kevin Davis-Edwards, Micah Simmons, Jahni Darrell and Damariano Corriea.

The Somerset assistant coach has urged anyone interested in applying for this year’s scholarship grants, which is available to those seeking a career in various trades, to do so at jandgscholar@gmailcom.

“It’s a good cause and we would like young people to apply for the scholarship fund,” he said.

“If anyone wants to get started in a trade, we are here to help. That is what it’s basically about, so we want as many people apply to Bermuda College for the scholarship funds so we can continue to invest in them in these guys names.

Crofton passed away in 2020 and Raynor last year.

State of the Art, whose squad featured Bermuda national team and Cup Match trio Malachi Jones, Tre Manders and Terryn Fray, won the 5-overs competition after prevailing against defending champions White Lightning in the final.

“We had a new winner this year in State of the Art who had a good team,” Tucker added. “The competition was really good.”
