Charles Trott’s season hangs in balance as surgery looms
Despite making a spectacular debut for St George’s in their morale-boosting win over 50 Overs champions St David’s at the weekend, Charles Trott’s season now hangs in the balance.
The all-rounder stroked a game-high 76 in his first match, which was delayed owing to his rehabilitation from a broken metatarsal in his left foot sustained while on tour with the national team.
However, Trott has yet to make a full recovery and is now facing potential surgery, which could bring his season to an early end.
“My next appointment is on May 18 and if I need surgery then that’s it,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“Yes, I do want to play cricket and train to see if I make the national team for September [2024 ICC T20 Americas Qualifier Finals, but I am looking at the long run and if the doctor tells me I need surgery, then I will sit this one out and hope to come back stronger.”
St George’s have been plagued by injury with all-rounder Jonté Smith out with a knee injury and captain Onias Bascome missing last weekend’s game with a shoulder problem.
Trott made an immediate impact in his first game since joining the East Enders from Southampton Rangers against St David’s.
He brought up his fifty off 69 balls in style with a six over extra cover off left-arm spinner Derrick Brangman but, more importantly, led a recovery after his side slipped to 69 for four in the seventeenth over, adding 38 with deputising captain Sinclair Smith (21) and 47 with Zeko Burgess (19) to steady the ship.
“I was a nervous at first but once I started feeling the ball in the middle, I felt pretty good from there,” added Trott, who was dropped twice, off the bowling of Brangman and Aaron Paynter after reaching his fifty.
“I feel good enough to bat but I am not bowling yet. My foot is still broken from the incident but I don’t feel any pain.
“I have never really felt any pain during the whole recovery, even when it happened. I feel all right but I am not going to overexert myself.”
The player sustained his injury while away with the Bermuda squad at the T20 President Cup, in Florida, as they prepared for the sub-regional qualifiers Argentina in February.
Sunday’s East End derby hung in the balance after St David’s recovered from a precarious 77 for six thanks to a whirlwind 98-run seventh-wicket partnership between Brangman (57) and Mikkail Crockwell (60), but St George’s ultimately prevailed by 51 runs.
“They had that little partnership there at the end and the guys were dropping their heads,” Trott said.
“But it only takes one ball to break a partnership and we got the job done in the end. It was a good win and definitely a confidence boost to beat the champions in an East End rivalry, but it’s always good to win games no matter what team it is.”
Trott has made a seamless transition at his new club whom he has also represented in Cup Match.
“I like the morale down here and everything is good,” he added. “I am fitting in and I am for St George’s when it comes to Cup Match and also have family down here.”
After two games, St George’s top the Premier Division on net run-rate over Bailey’s Bay, whom they host at Wellington Oval in their next outing on May 21.
