Stefan Kelly recalled to provisional national team for T20 World Cup qualifier
Stefan Kelly is among the new faces in a provisional national cricket squad for the ICC America’s T20 Regional Final, which the island will host in September.
The former St George’s Cup Match seamer has been recalled and is among a trio of new faces in the 17-strong training squad announced by the Bermuda Cricket Board, which also includes St David’s team-mate Cejay Outerbridge and Bailey’s Bay and Cardiff Met Cricket Club wicketkeeper Jarryd Richardson.
Bermuda moved closer to their objective after going undefeated on the way to winning the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifier in Argentina in March.
They will now compete against regional powerhouse Canada, Cayman Islands and Panama for the sole 2024 ICC T20 World Cup spot available in the regional final, with matches taking place at the National Sports Centre North Field and White Hill Field from September 28 to October 8.
Niraj Odedra, the national coach, believes the key to the island’s success lies in stability and unity.
“As we prepare for upcoming matches and journey to qualify for the World Cup, it would be extremely important for US to create stability in the team,” Odedra said.
“With stability comes trust from players towards support staff and management. We have already identified players who will get US to the World Cup and our core of six or seven players is going to be the same as what we had during the Regional Qualifier in Argentina.
“I have said it in the past, and I am saying it again – to achieve something big we need to stay united and that applies to all of the players, staff, management, media and the people of Bermuda.”
Bermuda will be led by captain and Sussex all-rounder, Delray Rawlins, who believes the squad can achieve their objective.
“I’m really looking forward to these next four months with this group,” he said.
“It’s an honour to lead them and I have a really strong feeling that something special is going to come out of this tournament.”
The entire team that represented Bermuda in Argentina earlier this year, which also includes experienced trio Kamau Leverock, Malachi Jones and Tre Manders and Terryn Fray to name a few, remains intact.
Dwayne Leverock, the chairman of national team selectors, said the door remains open for others to be drafted into the training squad in the lead up to the regional T20 final.
“In the next four months, during the domestic league season, the committee will also be keeping a watchful eye out for any other players that are deemed worthy of selection,” the former off-spinner said.
“On behalf of the selectors, I would like to congratulate the players that have been selected for the Regional World Cup Final in Bermuda.”
Allan Douglas, the BCB’s High Performance Committee chairman, said he and his fellow colleagues have gone to considerable lengths to enhance the island’s chances for success.
“As Bermuda embarks upon this frontier changing adventure, I want to say that the BCB has made a great effort to put in place as many resources as possible to make this a success for cricket and our country,” he added.
“It’s incumbent of all the players, committee members, management team and support staff to give their all to reach this goal.
“I would like to encourage all that have been approached, selected and others that are seriously being considered, to recognise that Bermuda, through the sport of cricket, will be televised to millions of people around the world.
“Come along, enjoy the process and commit to success for yourself first, family and country.”
Assistant coach Cal Waldron, manager Courtney Trott, fitness trainer Kenny Thompson and Osteopat Bakari Simons make up the remainder of the Bermuda coaching staff.
