Unbeaten St George’s and Bay meet in top-of-table clash
Gus Logie, the Bailey’s Bay coach, is cautiously optimistic the league leaders can come away with victory from their pivotal Premier Division 50 Overs clash with St George’s at Wellington Oval tomorrow.
The former West Indies player and coach says his team is well prepared for the match that could have strong bearing in the title race and are looking forward to the challenge in their first away outing of the season.
“After a good week of practice I would think the players again are up for the challenge,” said Logie, who also had a successful stint as Bermuda coach.
“We know the quality that they possess, and we are going to go out there with an open mind, a clear mind, in terms of what we want to do.
“We trust that whomever we select on the day will do the best that they can, not only for themselves, but certainly for the team as well.
“We expect to play well on the day and be respectful to the opposition, of the game itself, officials and certainly the fans, and look forward to another challenge against St George’s.”Bay top the standings by ten points over second-place Cleveland who are ahead of third-place St George’s on net run rate. All three teams remain unbeaten heading into tomorrow’s round of matches, with Cleveland and St George’s both holding a game in hand over the leaders.
Clay Smith, the St George’s coach, is fully aware of the significance of the match in the terms of the title race.
“Both teams are undefeated and the only other team that is undefeated is Cleveland, so this game will go a long way towards putting one of the teams in the driver’s seat for the league title, so it’s everything to play for,” he said.
The former St George’s batter is also braced for a tough outing against the leaders which he believes could potentially be won in the field.
“We are expecting Bailey’s Bay to come very strong,” he added.
“They have Delray Rawlins and one or two other players back on island, so it’s going to be an interesting game.
“We are expecting Bay to be at full strength and to put up a good fight.
“We know with Gus they are going to be very well drilled and organised, so we are expecting a tough game.
“There’s not much difference between the two teams and I think it’s going to come down to the team which makes the least mistakes.
“I think the game is going to be won or lost in the field in the bowling and fielding department, unless somebody has a really good day with the bat.”
Elsewhere, Cleveland travel to Southampton Oval to face bottom team Southampton Rangers while fifth-place St David’s entertain fourth-place Western Stars in their first home outing at Lord’s.
Meanwhile, sixth-place Warwick have a bye.
Action begins today with Devonshire hosting the Bermuda Under-19 national team in a First Division 50 Overs affair at Devonshire Recreation Club.
Somerset host Flatts at Somerset Cricket Club while Somerset Bridge will do battle with Western Counties rivals Willow Cuts at White Hill Field in tomorrow’s remaining First Division encounters.
