Devonshire Rec win thriller against Bermuda Under-19
Devonshire Rec picked up their first win in the 50 Overs First Division with a thrilling one-wicket win over Bermuda Under-19 on Saturday.
Chasing 227 to win after a decent batting performance by the young Bermuda players, Devonshire Rec seemed to be cruising to victory at 171 for three with Ankoma Cannonier and Clay Darrell both hitting half-centuries.
However, when Darrell was given out leg-before off the bowling of Dionte Dowling for 68, the next five wickets, including that of Cannonier, fell for just 35 runs, leaving Devonshire staring at another defeat with the score 206 for nine.
With Lamont Brangman and wicketkeeper Allan Butterfield occupying the crease, the under-19 team sensed blood and had a number of vociferous appeals turned down by umpires Moya Millwood and Steven Caines.
The two batsmen defended well and put on 22 for the final wicket with Brangman hitting the winning runs with a boundary.
Jermal Proctor was the pick of the Bermuda bowlers taking four for 49 in his ten overs with Dionte Dowling picking up three for 32 off 6.5 overs and Luke Fulton claiming one for 28.
Proctor had earlier starred with the bat for the under-19s, with the opener hitting a fantastic 95, off 72 balls, before he was caught by Darrell off the bowling of Brangman.
He was backed up by captain Zakao Hart, who hit 54, with Sa-Qui Robinson scoring 30 before being given out leg before, one of a number of contentious lbw decisions handed out by the umpires with both teams on the end of some harsh calls.
Fulton was the victim of a Mankad dismissal after Clay Darrell hit the stumps as the batsman was backing up, while coach Arnold Manders will have plenty of work to do on his young side’s running between the wickets with four batsmen run out.
Brangman was the pick of the Devonshire bowlers with three for 52. Darrell, Llineiko Millet and Aaron Holdipp picked up one wicket apiece.
Jermal Proctor, who starred for the under-19 team, was again in top form on Sunday, scoring 123 not out and taking two wickets to help Somerset to a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Flatts.
Having been put into bat, hosts Flatts reached a total of 234 from 48.5 overs. Opening batter Jan Johan Nel top scored on 82, with Kevin Hurdle the only other player to make any sort of telling contribution with 28.
Isaiah Richardson was the pick of the bowling attack claiming three wickets and giving up 46 runs, with captain Jordan DeSilva and Sheldon Caesar also picking up two wickets apiece.
In reply, openers Jacob Albertze (46) and Matthew Watson (31) got Somerset off to a solid start, before century-maker Proctor and Dominic Sabir (30 not out) eased their side to victory without the loss of any further wickets.
There was also victory for Willow Cuts, who overcame Somerset Bridge by 95 runs at White Hill Field.
Put in to bat, Cuts were bowled out for 192 from 45 overs, with Ras Solomon Burrows top scoring with 42. Chakote Basden supported ably with a knock of 30, while Kyle Brangman (19), Kevon Fubler (16) and Dwight Basden (13) were the only others to make it into double figures.
Joshua Gilbert was the pick of the Bridge bowlers taking two wickets and giving up just nine runs, while Callum Mcintosh also finished with figures of two for 25.
In truth, Bridge never looked like reaching their target as they were bowled out for 97 from just 28 overs.
Shawn Riley (20) proved the standout batter in a lacklustre attack with Niel Tucker (18), Adrian Burrows (15) and Joshua Gilbert (11), the only others to reach double figures.
Chakote Basden led the way with the ball, doing the majority of the damage to finish with figures of four for seven, while Fubler finished with three wickets.
