Hapless Rangers skittled for 46
Southampton Oval (Southampton Rangers won toss): St David’s beat Southampton by ten wickets
Southampton Rangers ended their 50 Overs league campaign in ignominious fashion when receiving a thumping at home by St David’s.
Rangers ended their season without a league win and and are relegated from the Premier Division as their struggle for runs was again evident against last season’s champions.
After winning the toss, Rangers captain Dalin Richardson opted to bat first but his side’s innings lasted only 22.3 overs as they were skittled out for just 46 runs, with only Makai Jacobs reaching double figures as he scored an unbeaten ten.
The St David’s bowling attack shared the glory with Derrick Brangman and captain Justin Pitcher grabbing three wickets each. Isaiah O’Brien and Aaron Paynter picked up two apiece.
It took St David’s just 7.3 overs to rack up the 47 runs needed for victory, with openers Derrick Brangman, who hit 34 from 31 balls, and Sa-Qui Robinson remaining unbeaten.
Richardson had been unable to prepare his players this week but despite Rangers disappointing season, he remains full of optimism for the future.
“The rain wasn’t a help to us at all this week because we couldn’t train.” Richardson said.
“Also, although we have a new groundsman, we don’t have a roller, so we couldn’t prepare the wicket the way we wanted to.
“All in all, I must give my players credit. For a rebuilding team, the scorelines don’t reflect our attitude or how we played our games. I must applaud my players for giving their best effort. We always had 12 to 15 players coming training so we have something to build on.
“If they keep up the commitment, we should be back in the Premier Division next year.”
Rangers were forced to come up with a new team this season after the loss of player-coach Janeiro Tucker, national team player Dion Stovell and bowler Nirobi Smith-Mills, with some young players forced to step up.
However, Rangers were not the only team taking to the Southampton pitch that may have underachieved this season with St David’s never looking likely to retain their crown at any point during the season.
St David’s picked up only two wins this season and both came against relegated teams with this victory joining the one against Warwick Workmen’s.
