Heads or tails: coin toss could decide outcome of KO Cup

The toss of a coin could determine a team’s progress in the Bermuda Cricket Board Knockout Cup if matches are unable be played as a result of poor weather.

“If there is rain, as we’ve had quite a bit here lately, there will be a coin toss,” Steven Douglas, the BCB cricket chairman, said.

“The name drawn first is designated as the home team. They will flip the coin and the away team will call heads or tails, and that will be supervised by the Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association.

“That’s how they will handle this in case there is inclement weather so games can go ahead.”

Douglas was speaking during the first-round draw held on Monday at the Clyde Best Centre of Excellence, which was also attended by Bermuda Football Association president, Mark Wade, and Niraj Odedra, the national cricket coach, who both participated in the draw.

Bailey’s Bay and Somerset have received a bye this weekend and will instead enter the 50 overs competition in the second round along with First Division side Devonshire Rec, who also received a bye after being the last team to be drawn.

“For the first round, the champions of the Premier Division, Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club, and Somerset Cricket Club, get an automatic bye to help us make the draw for the first round, which will feature ten teams, and the team drawn last will get a bye also,” Douglas added.

Teams will compete for a share of $3,750 in prize money with the winners receiving $1,000, runners-up $750, losing semi-finalists $500 and losing quarter-finalists $250.

The first round begins on Saturday with the Bermuda Under-19 team taking on St David’s and continues on Sunday with Willow Cuts facing Western Counties rivals Somerset Bridge, St George’s doing battle with Flatts, Southampton Rangers are up against Cleveland while Warwick will face Western Stars.

The quarter-finals will be held on June 25 when Bay, Somerset and Devonshire Rec will enter the competition.

The semi-finals will be held on July 2 and final on July 9 with the venues for all matches yet to be confirmed by the BCB.

The draw for every round will be held on the Monday before the games
