Western Stars will be looking to retain one trophy and make inroads towards securing another this weekend.

Jekon Edness’s team will rest their title on the line when they come up against challengers North Village in the Central Counties final at Devonshire Rec today before facing St David’s in the quarter-finals of the Bermuda Cricket Board Knockout Cup at Sea Breeze Oval tomorrow.

The former Somerset Cup Match captain views today’s final as an ideal warm-up for the knockout cup commitment.

“I am looking forward to my players getting out there and showing their talent, spending some time in the middle in preparation for Sunday’s knockout showdown against St David’s,” Edness said.

“We’re definitely looking to make the most of the time, the good weather and prepare for Sunday.”

Stars have yet to see any action in this year’s 50-overs series having had their first and second-round matches against Devonshire Rec and Tuff Dogs both rained out.

Meanwhile, tomorrow’s remaining BCB Knockout Cup quarter-final fixtures will see St George’s host Cleveland County at Wellington Oval, Somerset face Willow Cuts at Somerset Cricket Club while Devonshire are at home to Bailey's Bay at Devonshire Rec.

Newly crowned Premier Division and First Division 50 Overs champions Bay and Somerset both received automatic byes in the first round, while Devonshire also received a bye after being the last team to be drawn.

A large turnout is expected at Wellington Oval where home side St George’s and Cleveland will lock horns for the first time this season having had their previous meeting in the 50-overs campaign rained out.

Clay Smith, the St George’s coach, is delighted to have his squad back to full strength for the big occasion.“This is the first game of the season that we will be back to full strength as a team and I know the players have been keen to play Cleveland as they love the challenge,” he said. “We know if we want to be the best we have to beat the best, so this will be a good challenge for us.”

Smith is cautiously optimistic his players can be equal to the task.

“Cleveland have some exciting players that we have to be mindful of, so we have to limit our mistakes in order to be successful,” he added.

“I have all faith in my team to get the job done.”

Cleveland coach and former St George’s captain Clevie Wade is equally as keen to see his team prevail and make farther inroads towards their own title bid.

“It’s a big game and one step closer to getting over the line, which is trying to win this knockout competition,” he said. “So basically we have to stay focused and take one game at a time.

“We got over the line against Rangers and this is another step against St George’s.

“So we are looking to build on it and take the positives from the last game and move on.

“We hope to execute our game plans and basically it comes down to two things; who wants it the most and which team makes the least mistakes.

“We are just going to try our best to execute in the batting, bowling and fielding departments, so that’s what I am looking for and going to instil in the players and try our best to get the win.”
