Western Stars complete winning weekend with win over St David’s
Sea Breeze Oval (St David’s won the toss): Western Stars beat St David’s by eight wickets
Western Stars advanced into the semi-finals of the BCB Knockout Cup with a clear-cut win over St David’s on Sunday.
Chasing a total of 212, Jason Anderson and Jaiden Manders laid the foundation for victory with an opening partnership of 146 runs in only 25.4 overs to lead Stars to the brink of victory.
“Coming into this game, we knew St David’s weren’t going to lay down as we previously beat them in the league”, said Manders, the game’s highest scorer with 81 not out.
“This was a knockout quarter-final and they wanted it just as much as us. I want to commend my team as we stayed together and a big shoutout to my partner Jason Anderson as his experience combined with my youth went well today to help lead our team to victory.”
St David’s had earlier won the toss and elected to bat. Father and son, Sammy and Sa-Qui Robinson opened the innings but could muster only 14 runs before the youngster was bowled by seamer Naquan Smith for 3.
Veteran OJ Pitcher and Robinson stabilised the innings with a second-wicket partnership of 44 runs, which was broken when the latter was run out for 17 with the score on 58.
Cup Match hopeful Brian Hall would get the better of Pitcher with a ball that stayed low to bowl him for 31 runs with the score on 84.
Veteran bowler George O’Brien Jr was promoted up the order and dominated a team high, sixth-wicket partnership with his nephew, Isaiah, worth 54 runs before being bowled with the first ball of Seth Campbell’s sixth over for 37, which included three sixes. Isaiah O’Brien went shortly after when trying to hit a maximum and was caught on the long off boundary for 14.
Tailender Mikkail Crockwell made a quickfire 22 from 13 deliveries to push the score above 170 before being bowled when mistiming a short-pitched ball from Smith. Eugene Ball followed up with a useful 30 runs to carry the score to 212 before being last men out when playing on to his stumps off captain Tre Manders.
Having been set a target of 213 for victory, openers Anderson and Manders wasted no time in going after the chase with the former takingan immediate liking to Cejay Outerbridge’s pace with four elegant late cuts to the boundary from his first two overs.
The pair batted maturely, rotating strike regularly as the 100 came up in only 16.1 overs.
The 146-run opening partnership was broken when Anderson overplayed a George O’Brien slow one and was bowled for a well-played 60. Dante Wellman was bowled in the same over without adding to the score.
Captain Manders then joined his cousin, Jaiden, and the two put on an unbeaten second-wicket partnership worth 68 runs to carry the team to victory in 35.2 overs. George O’Brien was the pick of the St. David’s bowlers with two wickets for 52 runs from his 10 overs.
