Somerset eye cup semi-final upset over Bailey’s Bay
Somerset will be looking to pull off a major upset in their David versus Goliath clash against favourites Bailey’s Bay in the Knockout Cup semi-final on Sunday at White Hill Field.
The pair were pitted together during the draw involving the remaining four teams in the competition at Police Recreation Club yesterday.
“At this stage of the game it’s a semi-final and the last four teams all have good quality, so it really didn’t make a difference who we were playing against,” said Janeiro Tucker, the Somerset assistant coach.
“To get Bay is a nice draw and we just need to be up for the challenge. Bay are undefeated, we are undefeated and I think it’s going to be a good game.
“Bay has a lot of quality and I think we have the same amount of quality as they do, so we are coming to play, they are coming to play and the team that does the right things on the day will win.
“We are going to put our best foot forward to try and get the win and get to the final.”
Even though Bay are favourites, captain Terryn Fray is not taking the First Division 50 Overs champions lightly.
“Somerset, who we haven’t matched up with this season because of them being in the lower division, have some great players like Janeiro Tucker, who is a natural leader in that side,” he said.
“It will be a great game and a great test for us. I think it’s a big game in the sense it is a semi-final so definitely a big game no matter who we are playing.
“We are undefeated this season and looking to stretch that record another weekend and get to another final. I think that’s the biggest thing, just getting to that final and giving yourself another opportunity to win another trophy.”
Also looking to upset the form book is Western Stars who will face Cleveland County in the other semi-final at Lord’s in St David’s.
“It’s good for us to see Cleveland again because the first game we played them everybody was rusty,” Tre Manders, the Stars captain, said.
“We actually didn’t play that bad against them the first game, but this one will definitely be a test to show where we are at because Cleveland are one of the best teams in Bermuda. They have a lot of well-known players mixed with some youngsters which is always good.
“They lost out in the league so I know they are going to come at us hard to try to win this, so we just have to train hard this week because we know it’s not going to be an easy one at all.”
While Cleveland are the favourites to make the final, coach Clevie Wade is not taking the opposition for granted.
“It’s a good draw, and each team that’s in there is a good team, so you cannot underestimate anyone in this competition,” he said.
“It’s knockout and the loser goes home, so we have to prepare ourselves for the game and lay down the groundwork leading up to the semi-finals. It’s about planning and executing your plans, and we will be up for it.”
The final will be held on July 9 at North Field, National Sports Centre.
