Cal Waldron and Clay Smith complete coaching course in Mexico
Two of Bermuda’s most high-profile cricket coaches, Cal Waldron and Clay Smith, have recently returned from a coaching course in Mexico.
St George’s head coach Smith and Waldron, the Bermuda assistant coach, were part of an 11-strong team from seven different countries, who took part in the three-day ICC Americas coach tutor level one course, which included a theory session and practical assessment.
Waldron will look to use the knowledge gained from the course as he works with head coach Niraj Odedra to prepare the national team for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Americas Regional Qualifier to be hosted by the island at the end of September.
“It was interesting and enlightening, and it taught me how to assess coaches,’’ Waldron said.
“We had to take the coaching hat off and see what the coaches were doing and be able to give feedback on how they can be better coaches
“What it gave me is a reflection on how to organise more fun and inclusive sessions for children. I can use some of the ideas and tactics with the adults but we are certified to assess level one coaches and actually run level one courses.”
Smith’s participation in the course meant he missed his side’s three-wicket loss to Cleveland in the Knockout Cup last week but he feels his time in Mexico was important for Bermuda cricket.
“I thoroughly enjoyed myself and learnt a lot over there,’’ Smith said.
“Basically, it was for us to get qualified to be able to put on level one coaching courses in Bermuda. In the past, the board would fly people in or coaches had to go overseas.
"You get to meet other coaches and get some ideas on how they coach. I had to assess other coaches doing drills, we taught each other and learnt a lot from each other.”
The course was taught by former Argentina player Billy MacDermott, who competed in Bermuda in 2004, former England player Charlotte Dickenson and Monali Patel, with coaches from Canada, United States, Argentina, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Chile and Belize taking part.
