Russell Richardson to pass on 50 years of cricket wisdom
Russell Richardson, who has more than 50 years of experience as a sports team manager, will be passing on his knowledge to the next generation by conducting a workshop at the Police Recreation Club today.
Richardson, 75, is Bermuda Under-19 manager and is excited about giving away the knowledge he has acquired over five decades.
“I will be conducting a workshop at the Police Recreation Club and six people are attending,’’ said Richardson.
“My presentation, which should take about an hour, is on everything cricket, including local and international responsibilities, how to deal with various situations such as touring countries with civil unrest and dealing with player discipline.
“I have over 50 years as a sports manager, mostly in cricket. I have managed the senior cricket team, club teams, football and cricket at St David’s as well as women’s teams.
“I am passing on information to other people and this is my way of giving back to the game. I am not retiring yet and I will keep myself busy by getting involved in cricket.”
Richardson is looking forward to heading to Canada next month as Bermuda’s under-19 team prepared to take part in the ICC Cricket World Cup Americas Qualifier.
“We are in final preparations, putting the itinerary together and finalising the actual touring party,” Richardson said.
A squad of 14 players will be leaving Bermuda on August 5, with the youngsters getting an opportunity to witness the Global Canada T20 final live on August 6 and play a warm-up match before the tournament gets under way from August 11 to 17.
Bermuda are vying for the sole Americas spot at next year’s Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka with Argentina, Canada, United States and Suriname.
All the Bermuda junior players have been actively participating in cricket in the BCB Premier and First Division, with others returning from overseas to take part in the event.
“We have four overseas-based players in the team that's going to Canada,’’ stated Richardson.
“Three are in the UK and one [Terron Webb] is in St Kitts. The UK-based players are back and Webb we are meeting him ib Toronto.”
Bermuda have only qualified for the Under-19 World Cup once when they made it to the 2008 tournament in Malaysia.
