Women’s T20 match to be played in front of crowds
Female cricketers will get to experience playing in front of a potentially bigger crowd when Cleveland County and St David’s clash in the Women’s T20 League at White Hill Field today.
The encounter is being used as a curtain-raiser for the start of the men’s Athene T20 League First Division campaign in which Cleveland County take on Somerset Bridge.
Gabby Jackson, the Cleveland captain, is relishing the opportunity, which she feels could prove pivotal in motivating more female cricketers to take up the sport.
“The team is excited about playing in front of a potentially larger crowd than our normal league games which attract about ten to 20 spectators,’’ said Jackson.
“I am hoping that the game will draw attention to other women who may be interested in playing the game. There are a good number of players who are new to the game and some which are more experienced and playing in that environment will bring out their strengths for sure.”
Cleveland, one of the strong teams in the inaugural league, will have to do without two experienced players, Precious Smith and Reuna Richardson, who are unavailable. Smith is off island while Richardson is missing because of work commitments.
“Precious is an integral part of our team,’’ added Jackson. “She brings talent, leadership, a deep understanding of the game and its rules, she’ll be a big miss in the line-up. Reuna Richardson, who is a key batter and bowler, is also not available for the game. Her talents and presence will also be missed.”
The other match between Warwick Workmen’s and St George’s has been cancelled because the latter cannot field a team.
Last Saturday, St George’s could not field a full complement of 11 players against Western Stars.
