Delray Rawlins happy to play his part for Bailey’s Bay
Sea Breeze Oval (Bailey’s Bay won the toss): Bailey Bay beat Somerset by 17 runs
Delray Rawlins is happy to keep contributing to Bailey’s Bay’s success after his half century guided his team to their second straight win in the Athene T20 Premier Division yesterday.
Rawlins, who was released from his contract with Sussex this week, has made a huge difference to Bay since he returned to the island in May with this latest effort a 37-ball 54.
The national team captain’s knock included two fours and four sixes to take Bay to 123 for eight after they won the toss and means Bay are still to taste defeat in any competition this season.
“I’m just doing my part for the team and for the guys,’’ Rawlins said.
“More credit to everybody, they put in a shift and that was a team performance. I try to apply my skills and they come off, it was a pretty decent wicket to be fair, so it made it a lot easier.
“We are on a good run and we haven't lost this year, so we are trying to keep that going by just taking one game at a time, week in, week out. We stay strong, we stay together and then we will keep going places. That's the aim, to try and win everything, hopefully we get there.”
While praising Rawlins and off spin bowler Rodney Trott ,who picked up three wickets, Bay skipper Terryn Fray has one eye on defending the Eastern Counties title, in which they face St David’s on Saturday.
“I thought it was a good game,’’ Fray said.
“I thought Somerset bowled really well and their fast bowlers especially were hitting the right areas. With the wicket staying a bit low, I think we did well to get to 123.
“Again Delray played a good innings with some good, clean ball striking and then the bowlers, especially Rodney, bowled really well carrying on from yesterday.
“Its an all-round team performance once again and guys are holding their end. There is a lot of confidence in this side and we are still undefeated and having conversations about stuff like that.
It's on our radar and yesterday we went out looking to get points with the same again today on our home ground. We are just looking to maintain our unbeaten streak and if we can do that, then we are going to be hugely successful.
“The guys know what's at stake and what is coming up in six days, so we are just focusing on that.”
Somerset captain Jordan DeSilva fought hard to win the game for his team with bat and ball. DeSilva picked up three wickets, including the prized scalp of Rawlins, before he top-scored with 32 in his side’s unsuccessful run chase.
His 53-run partnership with Dominic Sabir almost took Somerset over the line before the two were bowled by Trott in one over.
“I think it was a game of two halves,’’ DeSilva said.
“We lost a close one yesterday and today I thought we bowled well. I still thought they were a bit lucky to get to 123, I thought 105, 110 was more deserved and that's the difference in the game.
“When we were batting, we just got too far behind. The wicket was doing a bit, they had too many bowlers and in the end we just put pressure on ourselves.
“It’s been up and down. We batted pretty decently yesterday and I thought we bowled well and lost it in a couple of overs. Today, I thought we bowled well for the whole 20, from start to finish, and probably had about a five, six-over period in our batting where we were really on top.”
