Macquille Walker takes six wickets as Bailey’s Bay retain trophy with draw
Sea Breeze Oval (Bailey’s Bay won toss): Bailey’s Bay drew with St David’s
Macquille Walker took six wickets as Bailey’s Bay retained the Eastern Counties trophy after a rain-affected match against St David’s on Saturday.
With play delayed more by more than five hours, the defending champions won the toss and put St David’s into bat, with the decision justified within the first three overs as Walker captured the key wickets of opener Oronde Bascome and No 3 OJ Pitcher for a duck and one respectively.
St David’s middle order managed to bring some stability with Jonte Smith, Macai Simmons, George O’Brien, Brian Hall and Justin Pitcher all reaching double figures before their side was bowled out for 105 in 29.2 overs.
Walker, who was later voted man of the match, ended with six wickets for 22 runs in 10.2 overs, mopping up the wickets of the final four batters.
In response, Bay made it to 65 for three in 23 overs before the game was finally brought to a halt at the cut-off time.
Bay will now play Flatts in round two on August 19 with Cleveland County awaiting in the final on September 2.
Terryn Fray, the Bay captain, was pleased with what he saw in the limited time frame, especially from Walker, whom he challenged to aim higher by again trying to play in Cup Match after he fell short for Somerset last year.
“It’s a great feeling and we put in a lot of work for this,’’ Fray said.
“The guys played brilliantly today, especially Macquille Walker, I rate him as one of the top pace bowlers in Bermuda and he bowls really well in good areas.
“There is more for him this summer, not just Eastern Counties but he should make himself available for the Cup Match Classic because he definitely has the quality to play in that competition.
With weather conditions creating ongoing uncertainty, Fray was pleased that he won the toss when the ground was belatedly declared fit for play
“It was definitely a day to win a toss with all the rain around and, fortunately, I finally won,” Fray said.
“So it worked out and we sent them in and bowled really well to dismiss them for 105. We went in trying to chase it down, a couple of wickets fell and we started losing some time, so the goal changed halfway through the innings and we just looked to draw the match comfortably at that point.
“It feels great, the guys are playing really well and we cant complain with that.”
Justin Pitcher, the St David’s captain, complimented his team for not giving up without a fight.
“We rather really messed up the whole day,’’ Pitcher said.
“The first half, we had to dig deep but you know how cricket goes. It's a learning curve and I commend my team fighting all the way to the end, that’s a true warrior spirit.
“We guys just go back to the drawing board and come back again next season. It’s always disappointing but as long as you take positives out of the loss, you can come back and try what you feel and you always have room for improvement.
“The plan was to win the toss and try to contain it. They ended up winning the toss and the rest, played out the way it did, I am just glad we finished strong, we never gave up.”
