Wellington Oval: (St George’s won the toss): St George’s beat Somerset by five wickets

The pain of being dropped last year fired St George’s captain Q'Shai Darrell to lead his team to a convincing Colts Cup Match win over Somerset.

Darrell, 22, was left out of the side that lost by 95 runs at Somerset in 2022, but took five wickets for 35 runs on his return as his side bowled out Somerset for 156 in 43.2 overs after winning the toss and choosing to field.

He then struck nine fours and three sixes on his way to a 50-ball 67,at St George’s reached their total in 33.1 overs largely thanks to an opening stand of 111 he shared with Jarryd Richardson before being named man of the match.

The win means St George’s have now won Mini Cup Match and Colts Cup Match as their senior side prepare to go into battle against Somerset on their home turf in just a few days’ time.

“I am very excited that we won the cup back and we can celebrate,’’ Darrell said.

“We won it in 2019 and we kept it all the way up to last year, but last year I was removed from the team for my tardiness. I was five minutes late and we lost the cup.

“Today, I was determined we needed that cup back. We have a strong team and we put our heads down and won the cup back with confidence.

“I believe what won it today was patience. We sat down and we fielded first. We didn't try to force anything and we made everything work for us. We did our job, we bowled them out, came in to bat with a lot of patience and we did our job.

“We hope it motivates the seniors to play as that's now two out of three cups. I’ve been trying out for the senior team for about six years now. My time is coming, I am still young and next year will be my last year playing Colts Cup Match.”

It has been an exciting few days for Warwick Academy’s Luke Horan, 14, who was at the crease when Najiyah Raynor knocked off the winnings runs.

Horan has been selected as the junior reserve for Cup Match and is also part of the Bermuda under-19 side that is leaving next week for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup qualifier in Canada.

“I’m just helping my team where I could and all I want to do is help the team to improve,’’ Horan said.

“Next year, we will be back again and we will win again. I am so young and getting involved with these guys early is what I need to do. I didn’t play much cricket when I was young, but I am having as much cricket as I can now. It's a great experience and hopefully we go bigger starting next year.”

Somerset fast bowler Jermel Proctor, 17, is another member of the under-19 team heading out to Canada and he felt his side did not post a sufficient total.

“Last year we won it at Somerset and, this year, unfortunately we lost,’’ Proctor said.

“We just didn’t put enough runs on the board and 160 is definitely not enough to defend. I felt like we needed about 220 runs at least and ideally 250, but we just didn't score runs today.

“As a bowling unit, we bowled well. We didn’t field too well but we lost the game by not scoring enough runs.

“I am excited to go to Canada and hopefully we could put up a good fight, win some games, and who knows we may qualify.”
