St George’s captain Onias Bascome has backed his team to pick up the 20 wickets required to wrestle the Cup Match trophy from Somerset.

Bascome’s side will need to bowl out champions Somerset twice over two days this week but the skipper is confident his side has the firepower to succeed.

“It’s definitely possible that we get 20 wickets,’’ Bascome said.

“We have picked a well-balanced team with a lot of all-rounders in it. A lot of people can chip in with the bat and ball but I feel this team gives me a lot of confidence to take this trophy back.

“There has been a very good vibe around the team throughout the training sessions. It's a been a struggle throughout the season with rain and how the schedule is organised. That did have a factor in us picking this team because we had one trial when we were looking to having three.

“I am very confident in this team. It’s an excellent selection and the selectors have done a good job bringing this team together.”

Bascome, 28, will be playing Cup Match for the eighth time, with his only taste of victory coming as a reserve in 2011.

“What motivates me is that I've never got to win it as a player,” Bascome said.

“I did in 2011 as a reserve but as a player I haven't reached that yet. The vibe that’s in among the team is very good and everyone is still pushing hard and working hard, so we are looking to reap the reward at the end.”

The captain holds plenty of confidence in colts Brian Hall and Azendé Furbert and feels they can bring a new dimension to this team.

“Brian Hall brings in a lot of variation with bat and ball as you could see throughout the season,’’ Bascome said.

“He has had some outstanding stats, especially with the ball in hand and gives us another little option to think about and to go with on the day as he brings something different to the table

“We also had to find the same type of temperament in someone to replace OJ Pitcher after his drastic injury and Azendé has showed that throughout the season. He is slowly getting to where he wants to be with his cricket and I feel it is the right time to give him the opportunity.”
