It took a well-executed game plan by St George’s to bring about the demise of Bailey’s Bay in the Athene T20 Premier Division yesterday.

The defeat at the hands of the T20 defending champions, brought an end to Bay’s previously unbeaten run of form, while St George’s kept theirs intact, as they remain on course to successful retain their crown.

Tight bowling from St George’s had Bay stumble to 97 for nine, after the home team had won the toss and chose to make first use of the batting track.

Opener Coolidge Durham top scored for Bay with 27, on a day when the usually dependable Delray Rawlins and captain Terryn Fray fell for just one and two runs respectively.

All six bowlers used by St George’s picked up at least a wicket each, with Zeko Burgess and Nzari Paynter leading the way with two apiece.

St George’s did not encounter much challenges in pursuit of the required runs, reaching 99 for two in 14.3 overs, to claim victory with 33 balls to spare.

Charles Trott, who knocked off the required runs with a boundary, which left him on an unbeaten 49 was pleased with the team’s effort.

“It was nice after Cup Match, how I was confident, we bowled well, we fielded well,’’ Trott said.

“Whoever was winning the toss was going to bat, it was a good toss to lose, we’ve done what we had to do, both departments came out with the win. As a team, as a unit, we had a great performance today.

“Bay has been undefeated all season, 50 overs and T20, it was always good to beat them, especially on home soil. We are gelling well as a team, everything’s good.”

Gus Logie, the Bay coach, applauded St George’s for injecting some spark into their game. Logie expects his team to come back stronger when they face Flatts Victoria in the Eastern Counties second round at Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday

“First of all let me congratulate St George’s for bringing their energy to the game, congratulations to them on the win,’’ Logie said.

“It was a game we felt disappointed in our whole approach and execution of our skills. Certainly wasn't what we expected, but like everything else in life, sometimes things don’t always go to plan.

“At the end of the day we feel like it was a little bit difficult to defend 97, a total below par, certainly not what we are capable of.

“It was a game that we were certainly not at our best and we paid for it.

“What we have to accept is how we go forward will be very important, it will take character, it will take what we have been doing before to come back and work as hard as we have been to make sure that we’re little bit focused.”
