Argentina player Pedro Baron in Select XI for Bermuda Premier League
Argentina cricketer Pedro Baron has been named in the Select XI for next month’s Bermuda Premier League.
Opening batter Baron, 22, has represented his country 17 times in T20 Internationals and was in action against Bermuda when the South American nation hosted the CC Men's T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier earlier this year.
Cal Blankedal, the Bermuda Cricket Board’s executive director, explained that Baron’s inclusion in the BPL, which takes place from September 6 to 10, was explored at a recent International Cricket Council meeting in South Africa.
“When president Arnold Manders and I attended the ICC meeting in South Africa, we had a meeting with fellow members in the Americas,’’ Blankedal said.
“One of the discussion points was how we could improve cricket in the region. In Bermuda, cricket is more advanced than in other countries in the region and when we play these teams, while we want to beat them, we want to help them grow. The more competitive they are, the better for us.
“Next year we might invite an Americas select team to the BPL. That is the intention and we want to make it even more international going forward. The only reason Bermuda has two teams in the competition this year is because we are trying to qualify for the World Cup.
“We’re also looking to tap into Argentina’s women cricket structures, with more collaborative efforts in coaching and umpiring. Maybe we can even help Bermuda football tap into Argentinian football.’’
Fast bowlers Macquille Walker, of Bailey’s Bay, and Somerset’s Jermal Proctor have been given a chance to push for national selection after they were picked for the Select XI side, which will be coached by Clay Smith.
There are no surprises in the national team squad with Jabari Darrell and Cejay Outerbridge, the standby players when Bermuda began their campaign in Argentina at the beginning of the year, picked in the main side.
Coach Niraj Odedrais using the BPL to run the rule over players before select the final squad for the World Cup qualifiers are selected.
