Cleveland out to topple Bailey’s Bay in Eastern Counties final
Clevie Wade, the Cleveland County coach has declared his team ready to dethrone Bailey’s Bay when the two clash in the Eastern Counties Cup final at Sea Breeze Oval today.
Cleveland have named Zeri Tomlinson and Shaki Darrell as the guest players for the final.
Tomlinson, who was a member of the Bermuda team that competed at last month’s ICC Under-19 World Cup Americas Qualifier in Canada, plays for Warwick Workmen’s Club, while Darrell turns out for St George’s.
All-rounder Makai Young, who has spent the better part of the season on loan at Western Stars, has also been selected.
With Wade adamant that all the pressure is firmly on the defending champions, he is hopeful of a repeat of Cleveland’s last triumph in the competition in 2018, when they overcame Bay by 65 runs.
“We’re coming to win, we have got nothing to lose,’’ Wade said.
“We’re not the champions, they are and so we’re just going to come with our A-game, hope things go according to plan and we come out successful.
“We’re coming to put up a big fight, the community of Cleveland County will be there and players have to deliver for the community.”
Mackih McGowan, the Cleveland captain, is also confident his side stand a great chance against Bay.
“We definitely have what it takes, it’s just a matter of discipline and having the mindset, not just from myself but from players and fans,’’ McGowan said.
“Cleveland have never been afraid of a challenge, with Dion [Stovell] and a couple of other senior players you can see the different mentality that they’ve brought.”
In naming their squad for the final, Bay have decided to stick with the same team that brushed aside Flatts Victoria by six wickets in the second round last month.
Terryn Fray, the Bay captain, is concerned about the storm predicted to hit the island, which could see the match not played or ending in a draw.
“Hopefully it doesn’t rain. In the event it does we have the have the cup so we’re not really too stressed,’’ Fray said.
“We would love to play and win but rain is a part of cricket. We are ready to play in the event there is a break in the weather. We’re hoping for the best.”
