White Hill Field (Barbados won toss): Barbados beat Antigua Grassroots Academy by 48 runs

Barbados coach Henderson Springer warned his players against complacency after securing their second straight win in the Bermuda Premier League yesterday.

Springer’s chargers prevailed on the back of another brilliant display in the field which saw their opponents’ last five wickets tumble for just 15 runs in five overs.

Unbeaten Barbados top the four-team standings and are firm favourites to win the inaugural tournament after their first two matches.

However, Springer has urged his players to keep their feet planted firmly on the ground.

“We remind our players that we take nothing for granted,” he said. “It’s just another cricket game and the same way you think you have a right to win, the opposition are thinking they have a right to win too. We have got to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk as well.”

Barbados elected to bat first for the second straight day and went on to post 146 all out with their top and middle-order batters providing the bulk of the runs.

Wicketkeeper Leniko Boucher led the way with 30 while Matthew Jones chipped in with 24, Rashawn Worrell 19 and Yvan Grant and Jonathan Drakes 14 apiece.

Ishmael Peters was the pick of the Antigua Grassroots Academy taking four for 33, while third change Jedidiah Martin took three for 20.

The Antiguans were still in the hunt at 83 for five but were skittled out for 98 in 18.2 overs after suffering a massive slide as the opposition’s tight bowling and excellent fielding took its toll.

Second change Kemar Smith led the Barbados attack with three for ten while Jones (two for 15) and Zidane Clarke (two for 21) were also among the wickets.

Middle-order batter Paul Miller was Antigua Grassroots Academy’s top scorer with 24 while wicketkeeper Michael Dover added 23 at the top of the order after his half century a day earlier.

While pleased with his team’s progress, Springer insists there is room for growth.

“We are very pleased but we continue marking ourselves against standards and the way we want to play as well as taking the opposition into consideration,” he added.

“I think over the last couple of days we have adapted pretty good to the pitches.

“I think that we have to continue to be more vigilant and more consistent with both our batting and bowling.

“We missed a couple of chances and that will happen in T20 cricket, but batting and bowling seems to be the main thing that actually sets up a T20 cricket game, and I think we have done that well so far.

“We continue to hold ourselves to certain high standards and I think we can get better. They are getting more accustomed to what is required of them, not only generally but specifically as well.”

Barbados will face a winless Bermuda Select XI, who are rooted at the bottom of the standings, in their final round-robin match at the National Stadium North Field on Saturday.
