Select XI out to cause an upset against unbeaten Barbados
The Bermuda Select XI will be going in search of a first win in the Bermuda Premier League when they face unbeaten Barbados at North Field today.
Clay Smith’s men have lost their opening two matches of the competition and are out of contention for a spot in the final tomorrow.
They started off with a six-wicket defeat by Grassroots Academy on Wednesday before they were put to the sword by the national side, beaten by nine wickets a day later. Smith, just like he did for the second match, is looking to tweak the side so as to give all the players equal playing opportunities.
“This tournament is mainly for exposure for these guys, trying to make sure that every player gets at least two to three chances,” Smith said.
“We’re going to make some changes again to make sure everybody plays a sufficient amount of games.
“At this stage, it’s about showing some character, having some fight.
“We’re going out to try and win, Barbados is the only team that’s undefeated so far, so it will be good for us to win at least one game.”
The batting has been of huge concern for the Select XI, with the attack not applying themselves at the crease on both occasions they have lost the toss and been asked to bat first.
Against Grassroots Academy they were bowled out for 74 before they posted 87 for eight. Smith believes the pitch on North Field should be more suitable for batting compared to White Hill where they struggled.
“We haven’t batted half as good as we could,” he said. “We’re looking forward to playing at the stadium because I think the wicket down at the stadium will be a lot better to bat on that the one we’ve had up at White Hill.
“We just haven’t made a good account of ourselves from the batting aspect, so we’re looking forward to batting down at the stadium, hoping that it’s a good track to bat on.
“On Thursday, when we played the wicket was damp, we lost the toss and we had to bat on it.
“That’s cricket, the wicket’s not always going to conducive.
“We’re not making excuses, we still didn’t bat anywhere as good as we could do. Hopefully, we can at least make a good account of ourselves on Saturday against a very good team.
“Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to do anything, Friday is the day off and all of my players are back at work.
“We’re not fortunate like the other teams to have this day off.
“We’ll just meet at the stadium on Saturday and have another crack at it. It’s just about talking to the players, reiterating to them the game plan, going out there trying to execute.”
In the second match of the day, the national team goes up against Grassroots Academy.
