Antigua Academy round off BPL with win over Bermuda Select XI
North Field, National Sports Centre (Bermuda Select XI won the toss): Antigua Grassroots Academy beat Bermuda Select XI by 63 runs
Captain Kadeem Henry led by example to guide Antigua Grassroots Academy to victory in the Bermuda Premier League third-place play-off.
The ambidextrous 22-year-old all-rounder stroked a brisk 34 and claimed four wickets with his left and right-arm spin as the Bermuda Select XI were dismissed for 100 in 19.3 overs in reply to the touring side’s daunting 163 for four.
The Bermuda Select XI were 82 for six before completely capitulating with their remaining batters being dismissed for the addition of 14 runs in five overs.
Henry inflicted the heaviest damage with the ball as he took four for 15 and he received solid support from off spinner Paul Miller, who claimed three for eight, while Uri Smith bagged two wickets without conceding a single run.
The local team’s spectacular collapse overshadowed some brilliant batting by opening pair Treadwell Gibbons Jr and JD Albertze, who added 78 for the first wicket to lay a solid foundation for the chase.
Albertze led the way with 50 from 51 balls, with five fours and a six, while Gibbons stroked a run-a-ball 29 that included three fours and a six.
Henry made the initial breakthrough in the twelfth over after taking a superb one-handed return catch to remove Gibbons.
It was then one-way traffic after Albertze was run out and Henry trapped all-rounder Allan Douglas Jr (10) leg-before in the space of eight balls. Douglas was the only other local batter in double figures.
Among those failing to bother the scorers were wicketkeeper Jarryd Richardson, Jordan Burgess and Shakai Darrell.
Earlier, the Antigua Grassroots Academy got solid support from their top order after being sent into bat.
Henry and wicketkeeper Michael Dover (27) added 62 for the first wicket with the former adding a further 20 with top scorer Smith (39) before being dismissed in the twelfth over of the innings.
Larry Audain (28) and Amahl Nathaniel (16 not out) also chipped in with useful contributions before the overs expired.
Douglas (two for 31) was the pick of the local team’s bowlers while Jermal Proctor took one for 27.
