St George’s and Bay meet in T20 title decider
St George’s and Bailey’s Bay are set to face off in an Athene T20 Premier Division title decider at Wellington Oval today.
Heading into penultimate round of fixtures, St George’s, the defending champions top the standings because of a superior net run-rate.
St George’s can guarantee themselves of the title if they triumph, as they have a seemingly more favourable final fixture against second from bottom Willow Cuts in their final match, while Bay face Western Stars.
Clay Smith, whose side is eyeing a third title in a row, does not want to entertain the prospect of finishing as runners-up to Bay like they did in the Premier Division 50 Overs.
“We’re optimistic, it’s the two best teams on the island playing against each other,’’ Smith said.
“We’re going all out for this. It’s been a long season; we want to leave no stone unturned and just make sure we do everything we can to give ourselves the best opportunity to be successful.
“Worst case scenario, we would finish second but we don’t take pride in finishing second.
“We want to do everything we can to win the and take ownership of this trophy. We’ve won it twice already.
“We know it’s going to be a tough game, we’re doing everything to prepare as possibly as we can.”
Bay coach Gus Logie admits he is facing a selection headache, with his squad all desperate to to play a part.
“We’re grateful to be where we are at this stage of the competition and looking forward to finishing the season on a high,’’ Logie said.
“The players are all enthused, they all feel confident on their own ability.
“That’s what we asking for, players to back their skills on the day, hopefully at the end of the day we can come out victorious.
“We do have a full squad to choose from and I think it’s going to be one of most difficult selection process we've had for the season.
“We’ve rectified the previous defeat to St George’s [eight-wicket loss in August] by winning all our games since.
“If you look at our performances since that defeat you will see that we would have done our homework. “We learnt our lessons and we were able to be successful in our previous games so I’m confident that we’ll continue.”
