World Cup Qualifier matches called off
Safety issues brought by Tropical Storm Philippe have caused disruption to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Americas Regional Qualifier, with two matches scheduled to take place at White Hill Field today being called off.
A decision was made by the event’s technical committee this morning to halt the action in light of the storm. The committee had sent out communication yesterday indicating that a resolution was to be made taking into consideration advice from the Bermuda Government.
“The event technical committee has decided to suspend the matches due to take place on October 6,’’ said the ICC. “Considering safety matters associated with Tropical Storm Philippe. There are no reserve days, matches will resume as scheduled on Saturday upon evaluation of the storm.”
Bermuda, who are leading the way in the qualifier were due to clash with Cayman Islands in the morning fixture while second-placed Canada had a date with Panama. The four teams will get a point each and that will not affect the standings.
Saturday’s main attraction at North Field, National Sports Centre, is the big clash between Bermuda and Canada, with the two fighting for the sole ticket to the T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies next year.
All Bermuda need to qualify is to complete a double over Canada since the Canadians have a superior net run-rate and would go through if they emerge victorious.
Indications are that the tournament organisers will try by all means to get some action for Bermuda and Canada tomorrow. A minimum of five overs is required for a result in T20 cricket and those in charge of the event are confident they can get those in.
