Niraj Odedra’s future up in air as BCB awaits funding decision
The Bermuda Cricket Board has conceded hopes of agreeing a new contract with national coach Niraj Odedra may be dependent on received funding.
Odedra, who is back in India, is awaiting on a new package to be tabled by the BCB after his previous contract expired at the end of last month.
The 48-year-old enjoyed a fairly successful tenure since first taking up the role in June last year, guiding Bermuda to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Regional Qualifier, before eventually missing out on progression on net run-rate to Canada, after the two teams finished tied on nine points.
While keen to tie Odedra down to fresh terms, Cal Blankendal, the BCB executive director, revealed that any offer will be guided by the financial support from the likes of the International Cricket Council, as well as the Government.
The ICC board meeting is taking place on Tuesday in Ahmedabad, India, after which the BCB will discover the potential level of funding it should receive in the new cycle.
“We’re still waiting to see what our budget is from ICC,” Blankendal said.
“Until we find out what the actual ICC budget is going to be, we are waiting for that before we can make a final offer to Niraj, and he is aware of that.
“Our government funding, we normally receive a notice on that at the end of March because their budget cycle is April 1 to March 31.
“That’s important, but what’s more important is the ICC funding, to see what the allocation to Bermuda is before we can make any long-term arrangement with not only Niraj, but anyone else as far as our budget for next year as well.
“We need to know what that funding is since we’re getting into a new cycle. We spoke to coach Niraj last week, so he is aware of everything we’re trying to do to expedite that matter.
“Both parties are happy to continue with the arrangement, that’s not even a discussion, it’s all about finances.
“Until we find out what our budget is going to be for next year, we can’t just make an agreement because we’re not sure what we can offer him. It’s just responsible financial management from the BCB.
“We’re funded by ICC, that’s where 50 per cent of our money comes from. If you don’t know what your budget is going to be for next year, there is no way you can say you’re going to do this or that.”
On the field, attention has already turned to preparations for a tournament in Malaysia early next year, which is part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
“We resume training next week,” Blankendal added. “We’re having a meeting later this week to outline the training programme.
“The season finished on October 9, it was disappointing at the end and so everyone requested to have some mental health time off, just to take care our their families.
“Now, it’s time to get back into that schedule, coaches on the island will be taking the team.
“You have to look at what you can do in Bermuda in winter, it gets dark early, so we have to work with weekends, and indoor sessions as much as possible if it’s a good day.
“We were planning for outdoors but with all the rain, and things we have, it’s not a summer season where we could have an outdoor training in the middle, our domestic coaches are more than capable of conducting the training sessions.”
