Disappointed coach Cal Waldron urges cricketers to play with pride
Bermuda coach Cal Waldron has challenged his players to give their best against Vanuatu tonight as they attempt to keep alive their slim hopes of booking a spot in the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League.
A heavy defeat by Tanzania has left Bermuda struggling in the Super Six stage in advance of the clash with Vanuatu, the only other team in the group with no points.
Waldron is aware that Bermuda’s destiny is not in their hands as even if they win their remaining two matches they will need Italy to lose their final two games to stand any chance of qualification
“A top-four finish is looking hard at the moment, considering how the results went,”’ Waldron said.
“For us, it's about playing the next match and giving a better performance of our ourselves.”
A gloomy atmosphere surrounds the Bermuda camp because of the manner in which they lost to Tanzania after collapsing from 79 without loss to 112 all out.
“It's a sombre mood and the loss to Tanzania has affected each player differently,’’ Waldron said.
“The reality is that it was a game there for them to win and the team didn't capitalise on that opportunity.”
There is not much time to strategise for Waldron, with the coach hoping the selected players will do the job against Vanuatu.
“We've made changes and adjustments after each game, tactically and player changes,’’ Waldron added.
“It now boils down to the players’ mentality and how they approach the task at hand.
“We will still review footage and data and come up with a game plan for the opponents and hopefully the players are able to execute it.”
