Clubs up in arms over watering-down of 50-overs league

A last-minute revision to the 50-overs league format has been strongly opposed by several clubs on the eve of the new season.

According to sources, the Bermuda Cricket Board’s cricket committee held a meeting on Wednesday night when it was announced that the league would consist of one round, rather than two as originally planned.

However, it is understood the Premier Division clubs have rejected the late change and are considering arranging a meeting with the BCB to air their grievances before any cricket can be played this weekend.

The Royal Gazette has reached out to the cricket committee chairman, Steven Douglas, for comment.

The 50-overs campaign is set to start on Saturday with Premier Division champions Bailey’s Bay hosting Western Stars at Sea Breeze Oval, while in the First Division Devonshire Rec face Bermuda Under-19 at Devonshire Recreation Club.

On Sunday, St George’s host Cleveland at Wellington Oval in the only scheduled Premier Division match as the game between Willow Cuts and St David’s has been postponed and Somerset have a bye.

In the First Division, PHC face Somerset Bridge at PHC Field and Warwick take on Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval. Flatts have received a bye.
