Lord’s (Bailey’s Bay won toss): St. David’s beat Bailey’s Bay by 110 runs

Newly appointed St David’s captain Derrick Brangman led from the front as he featured in a 39-run partnership with older brother Ricardo and then picked up four wickets to consign defending champions Bailey’s Bay to their second successive defeat in the Premier Division 50 Overs League.

Bay were up against it from the outset with Bermuda captain and Smash invitational first-pick Delray Rawlins unable to play owing to a stomach bug, but their decision to put their hosts into bat paid dividends when Kyle Hodsoll struck in the fifth over to trap Dean Simons leg before with only 13 runs on the board.

OJ Pitcher then joined Marcus Scotland to put on a team-high 41-run, second-wicket partnership to help stabilise the innings before Pitcher became the first of Michael Agard’s three victims.

Veteran Ricardo Brangman came in after the second wicket fell and featured in two useful partnerships with Scotland (28) and younger brother Derrick to help carry the score to 151 before he fell on 44 when he edged one to wicketkeeper Shaquille Outerbridge.

Young tailender Isaiah O’Brien batted aggressively for 27, the highlight a straight drive for six over the sightscreen off Chadwayne Johnson to carry the score over the 200 mark before he was cleaned bowled by Sharye Tavares going for another big hit.

Former captain Justin Pitcher was last out after scoring a useful 18 as St David’s posted what looked a moderate total of 225.

Agard was the pick of the Bay bowlers, finishing with three wickets for 31 runs with Tavares, Hodsoll and Johnson chipping in with two wickets apiece.

Bay were in immediate trouble at the start of their chase and were reeling at 28 for three after only seven overs.

They managed to take the score on to 49 without losing any further wickets in their ten-over power play thanks to captain Terryn Fray, who batted sensibly to try steady the Bay innings.

Shaquille Outerbridge started his innings shakily but settled down to give his captain much needed support as the two carried a fourth-wicket partnership worth 41 runs before Outerbridge drove one into the waiting hands of OJ Pitcher at extra cover for 20.

Bay were reeling at 75 for five after only 15 overs when Michael Agard joined his captain at the crease. The two batted cautiously and were selective in their stroke play as they rotated the strike regularly and picked out the open spaces to score their runs.

Just as the two appeared settled, Fray hit an easy return catch to St David’s counterpart Derrick Brangman to bring the curtain down on his innings for a team-high 30.

Bay then lost two wickets in quick succession as Brangman fooled Hodsoll into lobbing one to OJ Pitcher at mid-wicket before trapping Lorin Tannock for nought in the same over. Agard ran out of partners before being last out for 20 when he was trapped by former captain Justin Pitcher on the first ball of his only over.

Captain Brangman finished with four wickets for 29 runs and was ably assisted by newcomer Dean Stephens, who had two wickets for 20 runs. Aaron Paynter, O’Brien, Makai Young and Justin Pitcher all pitched in with a wicket apiece.

“There was a positive attitude from the guys,” stated new captain, Brangman.

“We wanted to play straight and bat out the overs, which we almost did. It was disappointing that Delray wasn’t able to play but we just had to do what we do best and not worry about the other team.

“I received positive feedback from the team today and it feels good to win my first game as skipper.”
