Charles Trott to miss Cup Match after breaking bone in foot

Charles Trott has no chance of making Cup Match this year

Charles Trott has been ruled out of Cup Match after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his left foot while playing for St George’s against St David’s on Sunday.

The all-rounder, who has suffered the same injury twice before, failed to finish his seventh over after being hurt while fielding during his side’s three-wicket defeat at Lord’s.

The 35-year-old, who is now set to undergo surgery to rectify the problem, conceded that his season was over.

“My season’s done and I’ll be back next year,” Trott said.

“I’ve fractured the metatarsal bone in my left foot and this is the third time it’s happened to me. It’s the same situation and I'm going to the hospital probably sometime this week.

“I've got a boot on the foot at the moment and I just need to get surgery to avoid the problem.”

Trott was not the only cricketer to pick up a serious injury on Sunday, with Bailey’s Bay’s Lorin Tannock ruled out for the season with a broken ankle and his team-mate, Chadwayne Johnson, set to miss the next few weeks as he nurses a pulled hamstring.

The Injuries to Johnson and Tannock are further bad news for Bay coach Gus Logie and his team, who have lost three matches in a row to start the season and already look out of contention to successfully defend their Premier Division 50 Overs crown.

“We had two bad injuries on the field on Sunday and one of the youngsters, Lorin Tannock, has got a broken ankle,’’ Logie said.

“That’s sad news for us, for him and his family at this point in time. We’re certainly trying to rally around that setback but also one of out fast bowlers, Chadwayne Johnson, who is starting his first season with us, pulled a hamstring.

“We’re short of a few players this season and we were hoping to rally with what we have. Some of our players were injured prior to the season, some players have made themselves unavailable for selection, and we have one or two players who are overseas.

“It’s been a difficult start to the season, but we’re going to press on with what we have.

“The start of the season has been tricky for us and we talked about it from the beginning of the season. We knew we were going to be short of some quality players and were hoping that the players that we have would step up.

“We certainly have to look at recruiting players going forward as any club struggles with senior players being out of the system.

“We’ll certainly put some effort into getting young players attracted to the club, that is the future. At the end of the day, there has to be a recruitment drive, not only by Bay, but most clubs, to get young people involved and interested in the game.”

Logie has also expressed concerns over the state of the pitches in Bermuda and revealed a number of players have raised concerns over the island’s cricket outfields, which he feels could be contributing to injuries.

“Many of the players have complained about wearing spikes on a pretty dry and uneven field,’’ Logie said.

“I think that could have caused a little discomfort for the players, while running on the surfaces.

“It’s something the clubs need to invest in as the surfaces all around the island seem to be very hard on the legs. That makes it very difficult for anyone to feel comfortable fielding and running around.

“I’m trusting that this will be the end of the injuries because it’s a long season and we wouldn’t want anybody else to get injured.

“I’m not too sure of the cause of the outfields being so dry this season. Maybe we had a lot of rainfall last year or it could be an issue of maintenance.”
