George O’Brien smashes century for Devonshire as PHC suffer first loss
George O’Brien Jr struck an unbeaten century and claimed two wickets to power Devonshire to an emphatic 133-run win over unbeaten First Division 50 overs rivals PHC at Devonshire Rec on Sunday.
The middle-order batter smashed 16 boundaries and five sixes in a whirlwind knock of 119, from 90 balls, as Devonshire scored 331 for seven in their allotted overs after opting to bat.
O’Brien then took two for 41 from nine overs, including the prized scalp of in-form PHC captain Chris Douglas after being brought into the attack as second change as PHC were dismissed for 198 in 34.4 overs.
Dean Richards was Devonshire’s next highest scorer after thumping 68 from 82 balls, including five sixes and six fours, while Drewonde Bascome gathered 48 from 70 balls, which included six fours and a six.
Darrien Gibbons led the PHC bowling with four for 35 and sent down three maidens, while second change Kevin Lambe took two for 74 in his ten over.
Middle-order batter Ori Wilson topped the PHC batting with 49 from 54 balls, including four sixes and two boundaries, while Douglas added 38, wicketkeeper Kevin Sunga added 25 and all-rounder Dionte Dowling hit 16.
Opening bowler Jahzardae Samuels did most of the damage for Devonshire with superb figures of six for 46 from 8.4 overs.
Elsewhere, Warwick got back to winning ways after prevailing by 108 runs over Flatts Victoria at White Hill Field.
Warwick scored 283 for eight in their allotted overs after electing to bat with opening batter Zeri Tomlinson leading the way with 91, from 140 balls, which included seven boundaries.
Captain Stephan Dill chipped in with a swashbuckling innings of 61, from 34 balls, lashing seven boundaries and three sixes, while Malachi Jones (37), Marcus Johnson (25 not out), Jahcobi Butterfield (12) and Shonari Boyles-Simons (18) were the other Warwick batters to make starts at the crease.
Shane Robinson (two for 43) and Nelson Bascome Jr (two for 47) were the chief wicket takers for Flatts.
With an asking rate of 5.66 runs per over, Flatts came up short in their reply as they were dismissed for 175 in 48.3 overs
The Eastern Counties side were in the hunt at 143 for four but suffered a massive collapse with their remaining wickets falling for 32 runs in the space of 12 overs.
Opening batter Jan-Johan Nel led the Flatts batting with 64, captain and wicketkeeper Kijaun Franks added 26, while Robinson (17), Reggie Baker (13) and Paul Carr Harvey (15) were the others in double figures.
Second change Marcus Johnson was the pick of the Warwick attack with three for 32, while Jamie MacFarlane (two for 37), Boyles-Simons (two for 28) and Trey Vance (two for none) claimed two wickets each.
